This Senior Paralegal is responsible for supporting the busy, fast-paced Intellectual Property Media and Technology (IPMT) practice group with all aspects of practice before the U.S. District Courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including all inter partes proceedings. Subject to the supervision of the lawyer(s) responsible for the matters, daily responsibilities include maintaining correspondence and discovery; supporting hearings, trials, submission of filings and administrative proceedings, cite checking briefs, and assisting with settlements. 

Paralegals also play a significant role in the retrieval, review, and production of documents, both incoming and outgoing. In addition, this role will provide support for all trials and/or arbitrations, working in conjunction with IT and Advanced Client Data Solutions to ensure all security requirements are followed and best practices are consistently applied. 

This is a billable position requiring accurate and timely submission of matter attributable billable hours and there is a billing requirement for this role of 1,650 hours per evaluation year.
JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Support lawyers in all aspects of PTAB, U.S. District Court, and ITC proceedings.
  • Support all aspects of inter partes reviews (IPR), post grant reviews, and interference proceedings including preparation and electronic filing of all submissions and paying applicable filing fees by deposit account.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of ex parte appeal filings and preparation of support materials for oral hearings before the PTAB.
  • Knowledge of and ability to support reexaminations and interferences before the PTAB.
  • Frequent and proficient use of the Patent Trial and Appeal Case Tracking System (P-TACTS), the ITC’s Electronic Document Information System (EDIS) and the U.S. District Court Electronic Case Filing (ECF) systems for e-submission of filings in all inter partes disputes.
  • Submit and reconcile all USPTO filing fees.
  • Maintain case files and document collections.
  • Draft correspondence and compiling materials for all trial proceedings and appeal proceedings, as well as assist with presentations and preparation.
  • Conduct legal research and case management functions using various databases.
  • Prepare and provide IPMT lawyers and Practice Operations management periodic status reports on outstanding issues and projects.
  • Cite-check and edit legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and write concise memoranda to summarize results.
  • Organize and prepare exhibit lists and/or privilege logs.
  • Coordinate with the Advanced Client Data Solutions team on initial case consultation potentially monitoring preservation, collection, processing, and production of client data.
  • Coordinate work with outside document/litigation vendors, including adherence to strict deadlines.
  • Ensure all engaged vendors are in compliance with the firm’s security protocol, the firm’s bidding process, and the firm’s conflicts and confidentiality requirements.
  • Closely monitor project/case status and provides routine status reports including task completion reports and data delivery schedules.
  • Train lawyers and Business Team employees on use of PTAB applications.
  • Participate in the firm’s global Responsible Business program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Sound knowledge and experience with all types of USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceedings, filings, and procedures.
  • Proficiency with using and leveraging PTAB’s P-TACTS, U.S. District Courts ECF, and the ITC’s EDIS systems for e-submissions of filings in inter partes disputes.
  • Familiarity with the following software: Concordance, IPro, Opticon, CaseMap, TimeMap, LiveNote, Sanction, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Relativity, and Concordance FYI, LiveNote, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), encryption protocol, online review applications, and all of Microsoft Office, especially Excel & Access.
  • Proactive, following through with the resolution of issues with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible attitude, with the ability to meet changing deadlines and balance competing demands and priorities.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and communication (verbal, written, editing) skills;
  • Analytical skills, with the ability to assess the cost/benefit of a course of action and to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions;
  • Ability to effectively present routine information in one-on-one or small group situations;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of client information.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Five or more (5)+ years of IP litigation paralegal experience in a large law firm preferred.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects PTAB, ITC and U.S. District Court best practices and databases, preferably in a law firm or corporate law department setting.
  • Experience with electronic discovery support, including coordination of vendor and data management for both in-house and web-based database platforms desirable;
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; and
  • ABA-approved paralegal certificate desirable.

HOURS

Core hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., including one hour for lunch. Must be available for overtime as needed.

The annualized salary range for this position is $125,000 to $150,000 depending on the candidate's overall experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.  Full time employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.  In addition, full time employees as well as some part time employees, will be eligible for the firm’s fringe benefits as they currently exists.
