Job Description:

General Description:

Under general supervision, performs advanced and complex phlebotomy procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Performs routine phlebotomy procedures, drawing blood samples and collecting other samples, for laboratory analysis as ordered by the attending physicians
  • Ensures containers are properly marked to identify the patient from whom the sample is drawn
  • Assesses Phlebotomy needs and makes assignments to ensure efficient response to requests for service, including EKG’s, glucose tolerance tests, and sweat chlorides
  • Enters patient demographic data, insurance and billing information, and the specific laboratory tests ordered by the medical staff into the laboratory computer database
  • Ensures prompt delivery of the samples to the laboratory for analysis
  • Performs record keeping relating and clerical work within the unit
  • May perform complex collection procedures including sweat chlorides, urinalysis, glucose tolerance, and process specimens for analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Completion of a Phlebotomy training course or a medical training course which includes phlebotomy training or combination of education and experience.

Experience: None.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of phlebotomy policies, procedures, techniques and processing requirements. 
  • Skill in performing all types of phlebotomy procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications. 
  • Phlebotomist must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his or her service.
