POSITION PURPOSE: Didactic and/or Clinical
Didactic/Labs/Preclinical (Dental Assisting/Dental Hygiene):
Being an instructor or faculty member is to provide high-quality education and mentorship to students. Faculty members are responsible for delivering engaging and effective instruction, developing and updating curriculum, and supporting the academic and personal growth of students. They also play a crucial role in fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, contributing to the college’s mission, and participating in community and college events.
Faculty members are expected to stay current in their field through continuous professional development and to use innovative teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students. Additionally, they are involved in evaluating student progress, maintaining accurate records, and adhering to college policies and procedures. The role also includes mentoring students and acting as role models, thereby significantly impacting students' lives beyond the classroom.
Dental Clinic (Dental Hygiene):
Supervises patient treatment in the dental hygiene clinic as required by the Indiana State Board of Dentistry Practice Act. This position involves consulting with dental hygiene faculty and students on patient medical and dental histories, prescribing and evaluating radiographs, and diagnosing oral conditions. Responsibilities include performing dental exams, noting and referring abnormal or pathologic conditions, coordinating emergency activities, administering or supervising anesthesia, and prescribing necessary medications. Additionally, the individual provides consultative services to clinical faculty and students, modeling professional and collegial relationships. Being a clinical faculty member is to provide high-quality education and mentorship to students. Fully supports the college's mission and strategic plan initiatives.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
1. Mastery of Subject Matter
- Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of the field of dentistry/subject matter.
- Display an ability to interpret and evaluate theories in the field of dentistry/subject matter.

- Stay current in subject matter through updated continuing education.
2. Teaching Performance
- Plan and organize instruction in ways which maximize student learning.
- Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Employ available instructional technology when appropriate.
- Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
- Communicate subject matter to students.
- Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials.
- Support classroom efforts to promote student success.
3. Evaluation of Student Learning
- Adhere to course and dental assisting program learning objectives.
- Develop and/or use evaluation methods which fairly measure student progress toward objectives.
- Evaluate and return student work within 7 days to promote maximum learning.
- Evaluate and provide immediate feedback in preclinical/clinical atmospheres.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and student progress using the learning platform and student success tools.
- Submit class roster’s midterms, final grades, skills/competencies, and attendance rosters to lead instructor, department/program chair, and administrators each semester according to established deadlines.
4. Clinical Setting
- Consult with dental hygiene faculty and students regarding patient medical/dental histories.
- Prescribe radiographs.
- Evaluate the diagnostic quality of radiographs.
- Evaluate radiographs for abnormal and/or pathologic conditions.
- Perform dental exams on patients treated in the clinic and note normal, abnormal, and pathologic conditions of the oral cavity and associated adjacent structures.
- Note and provide referral resources for patients needing additional treatment beyond the scope of the dental hygiene clinic.
- Coordinate activities and administer drugs (as needed) in an emergency situation.
- Administer anesthesia to patients when indicated or supervise the administration of local anesthesia by a dental hygiene student.
- Prescribe drugs for patients when indicated.
- Provide consultative services for clinical faculty and students so as to model collegial professional relationships.
5. Support of College Policies and Procedures
- Meet scheduled classes in accordance with college policy.
- Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Exercise stewardship of College facilities and materials.
6. Participation in College, Division, and Program Activities
- Respond, in a timely fashion, to information requests from College, department, and program administrators.
- Contribute, when appropriate, to program curriculum development processes.
- Attend program, department, and College meetings and events as feasible.
7. Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs
- Maintain familiarity with College goals, mission, and long-range plans.
- Contribute to planning and development processes where appropriate.
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements
Qualifications:
• Teaching didactic courses or labs/preclinical/clinical:
- Require current Indiana License to Practice Dentistry from Indiana State Board of Dentistry.
- Current CPR.
- Possess Doctor of Dentistry degree from an accredited university.
- Annual teaching methodology CE training.
- Annual CE in subject matter being taught.

• Proficient in dental software and/or dental technology.
• Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learners.
