The Engineering Project Team Leader for Earthmoving’s Peoria Proving Ground leads controls validation of some of CAT’s latest products and technology. You will work at the 2500+ acre (10km^2) site to validate new technologies and systems in real world applications. In this role you will lead a team to ensure core machine controls and future technologies like zero-emissions, remote and autonomous operation are developed and validated to Caterpillar’s high-quality standards. This role is ideal for those looking to round out their career with hands-on machine experience, team leadership, and managing complex projects.

What You Will Do:

  • Mentor and lead a team of engineers to perform controls validation to achieve program targets
  • Manage and track validation plans and budget to hit critical program dates and cost targets
  • Collaborate with internal development teams to understand New Product Introduction (NPI) program content, develop validation plans, and report back issues as identified
  • Perform software validation by operating heavy equipment (and we’ll teach you how)

What You Will Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • Degree/experience requirement: Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering or Computer Science curriculum OR equivalent progressive experience working in an engineering function.
  • Experience in Machine or Vehicle Controls: Experience in developing and validating software to solve complex technical issues. Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
  • Project Management: Experience in effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of resources to achieve project objectives.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving technical problems throughout the product development lifecycle, utilizing analytical thinking and problem-solving techniques to maintain project momentum and mitigate risks effectively.
  • Hands-On Work: A strong desire to engage in practical, hands-on tasks.

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Products and Services: Knowledge of Medium Tractor Products and ability to apply to diverse situations.
  • Technical Excellence:
    • Knowledge of CAN and J1939 data link communications
    • Working knowledge of datalink tools (CANape / CANalyzer / Vehicle Spy / Wireshark)
    • Knowledge of Caterpillar internal tools (Electronic Technician, CADeT, DATk, Supercomm 2)
  • Influencing Through Expertise: Ability to deepen and use expertise to impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.
  • Team Management: Proven track record of excellent problem-solving abilities, coupled with strong leadership and team management skills, enabling effective navigation of challenges, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Product Design and Development: Ability to understand product features; ability to develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
