Paid Media Lead Opening at Apex Growth

  • Position Type: Fulltime, Independent Contributor (Fractional opportunities available if interested)

  • Location: Remote (US-Based)

  • Total Comp Salary Range: $100-135K

A NOTE TO CANDIDATES ABOUT THE ROLE

Hi, my name is David Mausolf, one of the Co-Founders of Apex Growth, and we are seeking a Paid Media Lead to assist our team on the Search Marketing strategy for our partners.

The TLDR: In this role, you’ll work closely with myself and a cross-functional team spanning engineering to creative to grow our partner’s paid search accounts and finding new approaches to scaling and automating our efforts. You’ll be asked to work across a wide variety of industries and tools that Google offers. You’ll often have to quickly learn about new industries, their customers, and how to adapt your best practices. You will also be pushed to continuously uplevel your thinking process, learn how to streamline your processes and leverage cross-functional team members to enable you to achieve our partner’s search goals.

This is not a client strategist or people manager role, although you may need to hire people as your program grows. This hands-on role requires working on the ground floor of paid search. You should have a bias for trying to use technology over manual work or hiring to scale your efforts.

Why are we hiring an SEM Expert instead of a Growth Marketing Generalist? We are at a unique point in our business where we are beginning to specialize our team by bringing in experts for each of our services. We are looking to hire the best specialists, whether that is in pricing and monetization, paid search, creative strategy, or our other service areas.

WHY THIS ROLE IS UNIQUE

  • Team - You will be constantly challenged by myself and our cross-functional team of leaders who sit in engineering, analytics, creative, operations, and other channel experts.

  • Exposure -  You will get to work across a wide range of Paid Search clients that span different industries, business types, and goals.

  • Growth - You'll have the opportunity to develop and expand your skills in Paid Search strategy at Apex, diving deep into designing innovative, best-in-class approaches, including experimenting with new and untested methods.

CAREER PROGRESSION

We believe in having clarity about the role, the ideal candidate, and how to ensure they’re able to continue to progress in their career. I am looking for a candidate who can commit to at least two years, at minimum, in this role. Afterwards, your career can go a couple of ways:

  • Expanded Role: You’ll be asked to become a subject matter expert in an adjacent area that impacts Paid Media, for example, landing pages, app store paid search or onboarding.

  • Join Our Clients: As an integrated thought partner with our clients, we’ll advocate on your behalf if you’d like to join a current or past client. With a pre-existing working relationship, you’ll have access to top marketing roles that are promoted widely.

  • Remain Paid Media Lead: You can remain in your current role and grow your team and scope of clients as needed.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

In this role, you will assist on all paid search strategy and execution efforts for all our clients, including account structure, ads, which landing pages to use, testing roadmap, and channel performance. Your goal is constantly refining the best practices for our clients and how to automate your efforts.

Types of work in this role you’ll be asked to own:

  • Paid Search Performance: You’ll often be given aggressive targets by the client that you’ll be responsible for hitting monthly.

  • Account Structure: How to set up the accounts to maximize control and performance and allow for continual growth.

  • Ad Testing: How to best run ad testing, discover improvements to drive increased business results, and get statistical results.

  • Auditing: Analyzing potential clients' paid search accounts, iterating on your analysis framework, and defining what best in class looks like.

  • Budgeting & Bidding Strategies: Optimizing our strategies to allocate budgets and bids across our client’s paid search accounts.

  • Keyword Discovery: Building an always-on process for identifying new search terms to target that is profitable for the business.

  • Landing Pages: Advising clients and the VP of Analytics/Engineering (who owns landing pages) on new opportunities for landing pages supported by data. Running A/B tests to measure results.

  • Search Term Contamination: Ensuring that we are properly pairing the right ads and landing page to each search query. Prevent overlap of search terms across the accounts.

  • Incrementality: Measuring the incremental uplift of your paid search efforts to understand if they are driving net new transactions for the client’s business.

  • Audience Management: Ensuring we are serving ads to the appropriate audiences based on our client’s products and services they offer and based on performance.

  • Google Shopping: Deploying effective Shopping campaigns, structures, and priority levels relative to a client’s search campaigns.

  • Performance Analysis: Building a narrative using client and paid search data to explain changes in program performance.

  • Experimentation: Design advanced experiments, including locations, dynamic search ads, innovative, and performance max campaigns.

  • Events Strategy: Identify the appropriate events and metadata to be sent to Paid Search platforms for optimization and analysis.

  • Roadmapping: Prioritize and size new initiatives, both large and small in terms of priority for each client, and support your logic with available data to convince clients.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

  • David Mausolf (Co-Founder) - You’ll spend a large amount of time working with me weekly. Ultimately, we plan to hire a Head of Customer Success to whom you will report directly.

  • Maggie Valiunas (VP of Creative Strategy) - Maggie works closely not just on creative strategy but also on our client communication and strategy approach. You’ll need to partner closely with her on building the appropriate narrative.

  • Cross-Functional Leads - On an ongoing basis, you’ll work closely with our Head of Operations, Elissa Larabee, Sr. Director of Growth, Jennifer Wang, and other channel team members.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You are a demonstrated expert in Paid Media and one of two conditions:

    • You primarily have worked on the agency side but have demonstrated experience working with product, analytics, and engineering teams.

    • You primarily have worked on the in-house (client) side but have demonstrated experience showing your ability to adapt your paid search strategies to different industries or services.

  • You have had at least four (4) years of hands-on Paid Media experience, including your most recent role.

  • Comfortable analyzing large data sets and using tools (SQL, ChatGPT Advanced Data Analysis) to conduct your analysis.

  • Open to being coached and challenged by myself, clients, and cross-functional leads.

  • You are a perfectionist and set an extremely high standard for the work you produce.

  • Details-oriented and can spot issues in a large spreadsheet or looking at a large set of ads.

  • Extremely goal and deadline-oriented to ensure we can hit aggressive deadlines and client expectations.

  • Ability to communicate complex, disparate ideas in a structured and easy-to-consume way. Strong and structured writing ability is a must.
