This job maintains regular and successful follow-up on all cases in the Cancer Registry in accordance with the Louisiana Tumor Registry state regulators and the standards of the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer. Ensures complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all malignant disease and/or specific benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated within the organization. Works with all departments in the institution to ensure complete case findings and assists with the performance of epidemiology disease-related research including the study of cancer for the company's Cancer Registry. Based upon the patient records, prepares a summary or abstract for each cancer patient including pertinent facts ensuring accuracy of the data so that physicians and scientists can use the data to evaluate treatment methods and to find the most effective treatment for cancer.

Education

Required - High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

Required - 5 years of experience in an American College of Surgeons approved program or state registry

OR

2 years of experience in an American College of Surgeons approved program or state registry with an associate’s degree in a medical related field (experience to include data entry and abstracting).

Certifications

Preferred - Associate’s degree in a medical related field.

Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), or CTR-eligible with 2 or more years experience in an American College of Surgeons approved cancer program or state registry

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Good understanding of coding and abstraction of data.

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgement in performing duties.

  • Ability to type 40-50 words per minute.

  • Ability to be elf-directed and function independently with little supervision.

  • Ability to travel throughout and between facilities and work a flexible work schedule.


Job Duties

  • Meets reporting requirements for follow-up.

  • Abstracts core follow-up data.

  • Maintains production and accuracy standards.

  • Analyzes medical records and other pertinent information in detail.

  • Ensures abstract data is accurate and complete.

  • Participates in educational activities to maintain appropriate knowledge to enhance performance.

  • Responds to requests for Cancer Registry information.

  • Assists with the training and development of Registrar I employees.

  • Assists with special projects as assigned.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
