Job Summary:

To perform a variety of services involved in the cleaning, sterilization, processing, organizing, and distribution of dental equipment, instruments, supplies, and products used in the care and treatment of patients.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma/GED required and one (1) year of related experience preferred.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of equipment and instrument sterilization methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of basic dental terminology
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, staff, and superiors
  • Ability to comply with safety, environmental, manufacturer, and/or infection control practices
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in/around heat, humidity, and noise
  • Ability to maintain inventory controls and supply levels

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, disinfects, packages, and sterilizes dental and surgical instruments in accordance with regulatory and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Orders and dispenses dental instruments, equipment, materials, and supplies to dental students and faculty.
  • Sets up sterile instrument trays for surgical procedures.
  • Operates cleaners and sterilizers.
  • Maintains inventory levels and records.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, manufacturer, and/or infection control practices. Promotes continuous improvement in workplace safety and environmental practices.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking.
