Job Summary:

The Mainframe z/OS Systems Programmer is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of z/OS operating systems and related software. This role involves troubleshooting system issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring the stability and security of the mainframe environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Installation & Configuration: Install and configure z/OS and associated components, ensuring compliance with organizational standards.

  • Performance Monitoring: Utilize tools to monitor system performance, diagnose issues, and implement solutions to enhance efficiency.

  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve system problems, including hardware and software failures, and provide technical support to users.

  • Backup & Recovery: Develop and implement backup and recovery procedures to safeguard data integrity and ensure business continuity.

  • Security Management: Implement security protocols and controls to protect sensitive data and comply with regulatory requirements.

  • Documentation: Maintain up-to-date documentation of system configurations, processes, and procedures for internal and external audits.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with application developers, database administrators, and network teams to support mainframe applications and services.

  • Software Upgrades: Plan and execute software upgrades and patches, minimizing downtime and ensuring compatibility.

  • Capacity Planning: Assess current and future system capacity needs and recommend upgrades or modifications as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Experience:

    • 3-5 years of experience in z/OS systems programming or a related role.

    • Proficient in z/OS environments, including installation and configuration.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of mainframe hardware and software components (e.g., CICS, DB2, IMS).

    • Experience with performance monitoring tools (e.g., RMF, SMF).

    • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., REXX, JCL).

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with mainframe virtualization technologies (e.g., z/VM, KVM).

  • Knowledge of automation tools for system management.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools within the mainframe environment.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional on-call support responsibilities.

  • Fast-paced environment requiring attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
