Equine Veterinary Assistant

Duties: (including but not limited to)

  • Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostic testing, treatments, horse handling and restraint.
  • Feed and water horses.
  • Clean and repair stalls.
  • Set up and maintain diagnostic and imaging equipment.
  • Administer medications to patients.
  • Collect, prepare and label various specimens (including blood, urine, feces) for laboratory testing.
  • Administer vaccines and medication.
  • Use aseptic techniques to prepare sites for injections, intravenous catheterization etc.
  • Fill out various forms
  • Properly monitor patients, noticing and documenting any changes.
  • Assist with physical examinations and lameness, including trotting.
  • Assist with dental procedures and must be able to support patient's head during procedures.
  • Assist with surgical procedures by administering sedation, monitoring sedation and patient vitals.
  • Some light groundskeeping.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of accredited technical school (preferred, not required).
  • At least one (1) years’ experience of equine handling is required.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 40+ lbs.
  • Ability to jog for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to physically support patients during dental procedures by holding the head and tongue.
  • Have knowledge of veterinary terminology and anatomy.

This is a very physical job, and it involves being exposed to outdoor elements and the Texas heat.

Bilingual English/Spanish is required.

Full-time position, 5 days a week with possible evenings and weekends.

The hours are 7:30am-5:30pm, Monday to Friday. Lunch from 12:00pm-1:30pm (subject to schedule and emergencies)

Pay is based on experience and licensure, starting at $16.00/hour.
