How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?

The Manager, Division Sales Tax & Dispute Resolution is responsible for providing leadership and guidance for daily activities related to assuring customers are taxed properly and customer payment/invoicing disputes are resolved in order to ensure an accurate reflection of customers’ receivable balance. Functions of the department include ensuring tax exemptions are properly documented, customer tax and non-tax disputes are resolved and use tax is properly applied. Also to review vendor PO’s and invoices to ensure Airgas is being taxed properly.
  •  Provides leadership and direction to Sales & Use Tax associates.

    • Develops and conducts training programs to new and existing employees as well as technical and legal training.

    • Provides guidance and oversight related to the research and resolution of customer payment/invoicing disputes (tax related) and ensures follow-through and resolution of the dispute root cause.

    • Creates, measures, and monitors receivable performance, including monthly metrics and provides support/reporting to the Division Controller, CFO, and Credit and Collections Management.

    • Analyzes, reviews, and makes determinations on how to properly integrate newly acquired businesses into the Company’s sales tax function.

    • Directly manage all aspects of sales/use tax audits

  • Responsible for managing the division's daily functions related to customer taxability and resolution of customer disputes. Daily functions include:

    • Ensures all customers that have special tax exemptions have active and approved tax exemptions on file (in Docuware)

    • Ensures all newly created customers have tax rates that are set up correctly prior to be invoiced

    • Ensure tax related disputes are closed within expectations

    • Utilizes research tools and critical thinking to determine the proper taxability of customers and transactions.

    • Researches, understands, interprets, and communicates sales and use tax laws to both internal and external customers.

    • Supports the Corporate Tax Department in managing customer tax exceptions in sales tax software, which will involve special setups of select item customers that do not follow a standard tax category.

    • Provides support for sales tax audits.

    • Reviews customer transactions generated which will require daily oversight through the SAP billing block report and SAP tax override report. Assist locations to resolve tax issues for daily blocks and daily tax overrides.

    • Approves and processes tax only credit invoice requests generated for short pays on invoices due to sales taxes.

    • Reviews and approves exemption certificates provided by customers in order to substantiate customer exemptions.

    • Prioritizes workload to ensure disputes are resolved as efficiently and accurately as possible

    • Proactively interacts with internal and external customers to reduce the amount of new disputes.

    • Oversees Specialists related to the research, resolution and identification of root cause of customer payment/invoicing disputes, including:

  • Short payments for pricing issues, fees, surcharges, or any combination of items.

  • Identification and determination of the validity of short pay discounts.

  • Review vendor PO’s and invoices to determine if tax is or is not applicable depending on item(s) being purchased.

  • Review capital projects to ensure all sales/use tax has been reported properly.

  • Obtain & maintain business licenses for all division locations where required and file required business license reports.

  • Completes corporate tax-related projects.

  • Develops, implements, and monitors procedures to ensure effective work flow in the dispute management department. Suggests improvements to procedures where applicable for efficiency.

  • Works with other Division teams on cross-Divisional customers and best practices.

  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Are you a MATCH?

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.

  • Requires six (6) years of prior sales tax and customer relations experience in positions of increasing responsibility

  • Prior accounting/finance industry experience preferred.

  • Experience with Vertex or other sales tax software a plus.

  • Experience with Google Platform

  • Knowledge of current state and local (multi-jurisdictional) sales/use tax laws, concepts, policies, and regulations and the specific application of these to manufacturing and retailing industries

  • Experience with SAP and/or ERP systems is a plus.

  • Experience with Excel or any other spreadsheet software program.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and juggle between divisional, local and corporate management and demands.

  • Ability to analyze and disseminate large amounts of data.

  • Exhibits customer focused behavior such as building positive relationships and strives to understand customer’s needs, both internal and external.

  • Ability to deal with difficult situations in a diplomatic and professional manner.

  • Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills with the ability to make independent decisions based on investigation and judgment as well as ability to discern when to escalate issues.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to adjust communication methods based on customer situations.

  • A positive approach and willingness to learn coupled with the ability to work in a team environment.
