The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 18-month contract at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP).

Project Title: Main Study of CORE 4 Research Programme: Education Trend Studies of Designated Subject Domain (DSD) Pedagogies in Singapore’s Primary and Secondary Classrooms (C4MS).

Project Introduction: The Core Research Programme aims to provide a systemic measurement and modelling of curriculum and reform initiatives and pedagogical practices in a representative sample of Primary and Secondary schools in Singapore. Core has undergone three iterations and the Core 4 Main Study will continue the central objective of conducting empirical investigations into the nature of the “instructional core” of teaching and learning in Singapore classrooms. Research will focus on a series of Designated Subject Domains, which include English Language, English Literature, History, Humanities, Geography, Mathematics and Mother Tongue.

Requirements:

Essential

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in psychology, social sciences, education, or statistics.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Preferred

  • Experience in using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and/or NVivo qualitative data analysis software.
  • Experience in classroom observations and video data coding.
  • Experience of collating and organising large amounts of data (video/audio)
  • Skills in or knowledge of managing/using a Network Attached Systems (NAS) to store data.
  • Skills in or knowledge of setting up/managing a website.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform literature review and report writing
  • Conduct data collection (questionnaire, student artefacts, classroom observations, focus group discussions, interviews), transcription, qualitative and quantitative data analysis
  • Perform project administration tasks such as scheduling and liaising with teachers and preparation of materials
  • Manage research data and assist with managing the Network Attached System
  • Assisting the Principal Investigator in writing papers/publications and creating presentation materials.
  • Perform other assignments as determined by the Principal Investigator and co-Principal Investigators
