Summary :

The System Staff Attorney supports the Chief Legal Officer, Associate General Counsel, corporate, and operational departments of ThedaCare, human resources, and ThedaCare’s legal department by providing legal advice and counsel to administrators, leaders, physicians, and team members of ThedaCare in areas including corporate and medical staff governance, risk management, safety and security, and transactional and regulatory matters.

Job Description:

Key Accountabilities:

  • Effectively interacts with team members in a manner consistent with ThedaCare policies and values. 

  • Ensures the recruitment and retention of competent team members to meet the needs of the business operations of the department.

  • Is accountable for daily activities and work processes that result in quality outcomes.

  • Counsels administration, operations, human resources, and team members on legal and regulatory developments, daily issues, and legal questions (i.e., risk management, patient rights, consent to treatment, and other matters involving legal and compliance issues).

  • Negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts on behalf of ThedaCare.

  • Oversees the contract review process and optimizes its supporting technology.

  • Identifies gaps and opportunities that create legal and compliance risk, recommends solutions, and advocates for resources and/or processes to address these areas.

  • Works with administration, operational management, human resources, and corporate departments to develop, initiate, maintain, and revise policies and procedures consistent with the law.

  • Maintains strong awareness of laws and healthcare regulations.

  • Keeps abreast of current changes that may affect ThedaCare through personal initiative, seminars, training programs, and peer contact.

  • Develops legal presentations to assist team members with training and education appropriate to their job duties.

  • Ensures/monitors document preservation, document collection, and production of hard copy and electronic information including contracts, policies, and other legal documents.

  • Prepares corporate documentation including withdrawals, mergers, and dissolutions of corporations, partnerships, and/or limited liability companies as well as corporate filings as required by applicable federal and state laws.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree

  • Active member of the State Bar of Wisconsin

  • Three years of progressive professional responsibility; preferably in healthcare administration

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance

  • Job classification is not exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

Work Environment

  • Normally works in climate controlled office environment

  • Frequent sitting with movement throughout office space

  • Use of computers throughout the work day

  • Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers

Position requires compliance with department specific competencies.

1-3 years of relevant contracting experience preferred, but recent law school graduates with contracting internship experience will be considered
