Sales Development Representative

We are seeking a highly energetic Sales Development Representative to help us grow our new business lines by finding and speaking with outbound prospects. This is an amazing opportunity to be hands-on in driving sales for an established, but still fast-growing AI startup. If this sounds exciting to you and you have some sales or SDR/ BDR experience - get in touch!

The Opportunity

  • Huge untapped revenue potential: Heron is growing quickly despite historically under-investing in sales. Of our 130+ customers, all but a handful were acquired directly by one of our founders (Jamie). We are now exploring opportunities in new, untapped markets. You will be leading the charge as we continue to grow, and have the opportunity to share in our growth by earning commission on sales that you source.

  • Personal growth opportunities: as we grow, we’re able to offer Herons larger and different opportunities. You’ll be one of our first sales hires in NYC with the opportunity to establish yourself as a star. Depending on your ambitions, this role could develop in many ways. Looking at the last two SDRs we hired - one is now a senior seller, the other also works in sales while leading other go-to-market work such as marketing and partnerships.

  • An environment where you can do your best work: it’s a cliché, but we truly believe it. Underpinning our rapid growth is a lean, scrappy and committed team. We get our hands dirty, move quickly, and aspire to go above and beyond for our customers. We have a very flat structure where you’ll work directly with our founders and other leaders in the company every day. For someone early in their career in tech, it’s an unmatched opportunity to join an established, but still small and fast-growing startup.

What We’re Looking For

Our ideal hire will be:

  • Some sales experience or a natural inclination for sales: this is a junior role, so we’re not expecting years of experience. But we want to know that you’ve proven you can sell, or at least are…

  • Highly energetic and ambitious: we find the energy of our salespeople to be highly infectious - they really set the tone. When they’re bringing a positive attitude to the office, it rubs off. You’ll bring a high level of energy and a sense of urgency to your work - and help us all do the same!

  • Sociable and a relationship builder: we have made a lot of progress building our brand and profile, but we have a long way to go. We think building trust with individuals across the industries we serve is the key, and you’ll play a large role in doing this.

  • Adaptable and open to experimentation: while sometimes repetitive, it’s hard to reduce this SDR role to a totally fixed process. And anyway, that wouldn’t be much fun! We’ll expect you to not only be adaptable, but also to proactively experiment with the sales pitch and process.

  • Metrics-driven: you thrive on meeting and smashing through your targets, and are motivated by having your impact on the business be measured and visible.

  • Clear communicator: you can speak to anyone, internally or externally, and be coherent and compelling.

  • Technically savvy: you’ll be comfortable with modern software, and you’ll be able to understand and articulate technical concepts (e.g. AI/ LLMs, APIs).

Above all else, we value people who want to make an impact in their work. Here are some of the behaviors that we expect of all Herons:

  • Scrappy and creative: when faced with an obstacle, you will either overcome it by pure determination (i.e., by hand), or find an unconventional approach or ‘hack’ to navigate it.

  • Persistent: you may not always find the right answer or person immediately, but you're motivated to keep on trying until you do so. You’ll go the extra mile - including Flying to Gainesville - if that’s what it takes.

  • Pilot not passenger: at a fast-growing company like Heron we need people who jump on opportunities unprompted and drive them to a great outcome, rather than folks who wait to be told what to do.

  • Excited to work in a fast-paced, high-growth, team-based environment: we aim to move quickly and decisively, but together. You’ll be a great team player and do what it takes for the team to succeed.

What You Can Expect as a Heron

  • Competitive compensation, including commission and equity (note that the upper end of the salary range advertised includes commission)

  • Based full-time and in-person in our NYC office, with occasional travel to customers (across the country) and company retreats (often in London)

  • Your choice of top-of-the-line equipment to fit out your desk in our office

  • Competitive benefits package: health, dental, vision with partial coverage for dependents; 401K; uncapped PTO; parental leave

  • Free mental health support via Spill - on-demand access to therapy

  • Weekly company lunches (always inclusive and vegan-friendly - especially if you like Vietnamese food!)

  • Applicants from any background and gender are welcome and we have a zero tolerance policy on discrimination

Hiring Process

Note: this is a sales role, so if you’re applying, don’t just send us your CV. Get creative and sell us on you!

  • 1 or 2 initial ‘get to know you’ conversations

  • Take-home challenge - a task which roughly represents the work we would expect from you

  • Team interviews - 2-3 hours in-person, mix of skills-based and behavioral interviews

  • Final round CEO interview - mostly focused on fit
