Position Summary...

Provides overall direction by analyzing business objectives and customer needs; developing, communicating, building support for, and implementing business strategies, plans, and practices; analyzing costs and forecasts and incorporating them into business plans; determining and supporting resource requirements; evaluating operational processes; measuring outcomes to ensure desired results; identifying and capitalizing on improvement opportunities; promoting a customer environment; and demonstrating adaptability and sponsoring continuous learning. Ever wondered what would a convergence of online and offline advertising systems looks like? Ever wondered how we can bridge the gap between sponsored search, display, video ad formats? Ever thought how we can write our own ad servers which serve billions of requests in near real time?

Our Advertising Technology team is building an end-to-end advertising platform that is key to Walmart’s overall growth strategy. We use cutting edge machine learning, data mining and optimization algorithms to ingest, model and analyze Walmart’s proprietary online and in-store data, encompassing 95% of American households. Importantly, we build smart data systems that deliver relevant retail ads and experiences that connect our customers with the brands and products they love.

AdTech Data Science team at Walmart Global Tech focuses on using the latest research in machine learning, statistics, and optimization to solve business problems in Targeting, Forecasting, Pricing, Auctions, and a lot of niche use cases around discriminative and generative AI. We mine data, distill insights, extract information, build analytical models, deploy Machine Learning algorithms, and use the latest algorithms and technology to empower business decision-making. In addition, we work with engineers to build reference architectures and machine learning pipelines in a big data ecosystem to productize our solutions. Advanced analytical algorithms driven by our team will help Walmart to enable timely strategic decisions, optimize business operations and business practices.

What you'll do:

As team lead, grow a team of high performing data scientists and drive business value through application of advanced analytics and data science.

  • Coordinate across retail value chain functional teams of data scientists, analysts, product managers, engineers, and business operators on value realization initiatives.
  •  Develop and leverage a consistent framework to identify and prioritize uses cases based on business value.
  • Play a key role to solve complex problems, pivotal to Walmart's business and drive actionable insights.
  •  Utilize product mindset to build, scale and deploy holistic data science products after successful prototyping.
  • Demonstrate incremental solution approach with agile and flexible ability to overcome practical problems.
  • Lead and collaborate with the team to assess customer needs and translate the business problem into an analytical problem.
  •  Establish data science best practices and drive the use of state of art techniques.
  • Build a data culture and influence data-drive decision making across business.
  • Develop and leverage internal and external partnerships and networks to maximize the achievement of business goals.
  • Architect, develop, and deploy large-scale AI / ML solutions from prototype through production that meet key business requirements (performance, reliability, speed, monitoring, self-service, etc.).
  •  Establish operational and engineering excellence for data science products.
  •  Influence the domain’s data strategy, providing input into overall technical roadmap and data acquisition / transformation prioritization.
  • Build the Advertising Tech Data Science brand for Walmart internally and externally.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract, develop, and retain a highly skilled and engaged workforce
  • Mentor and coach data scientists.
  • Drive innovation in approach, method, practices, process, outcome, delivery, or any component of end-to-end problem solving.
  • Promote and support company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor’s / Masters / PhD degree in engineering or relevant discipline
  • At least 15+yrs years of professional experience in roles focused on adding value through building analytics and data science-based solutions and products for complex, cross functional business problems
  • Strong background with Machine Learning and Deep Learning concepts and experience working closely with Data Scientists to scope and deliver use cases
  • Working knowledge of Generative AI and LLMs
  • Proficiency in modern software engineering practices and core computer science concepts across algorithms, data structures and distributed computing
  • Knowledge of data warehousing and data lake concepts, methodologies, and frameworks and their implications on data science solutions.
  • Knowledge of software engineering / DevOps / MLOps practices including experimentation and testing methodologies.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms
  • Entrepreneurial attitude and ability to drive change and navigate ambiguity when building new capabilities in an enterprise setting
  • Background in managing AI/ML and technology teams and partnering with business leaders is essential
  • Good knowledge of agile methodologies and tools
  • Passion for understanding business challenges and delivering against those challenges
  • Previous roles with leading companies in the retail industry are a plus
