Job Description

The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, Las Vegas, Nevada invites applications for an Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation Training (Open Rank) [R0140063].

ROLE of the POSITION

The Department of Academic Affairs at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV is seeking an Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation Training (Open Rank), which opened its doors in 2023, the Clinical Skills and Simulation center of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV supports the mission of the SOM by offering educational programs in the clinical skills and simulation training. These programs will span the medical education continuum, including undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. The Center will also provide opportunities for interprofessional training and research. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Education, the Assistant Dean will oversee all aspects of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Training center, including administrative operations, educational programming, and research. The Assistant Dean will oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of clinical skills and simulation training in the undergraduate medical education program. The Assistant Dean will oversee and employ a variety of educational methods, including the use of standardized patients, task trainers, and low- and hi-fidelity simulators. The Assistant Dean will support the Vice Dean in acquiring educational resources for clinical skills and simulation education. The Assistant Dean will ensure that the center complies with all applicable institutional, local, state, and federal regulations.

The Assistant Dean will work closely with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and other leaders in the Office of Academic Affairs. The Assistant Dean will collaborate with the Offices of Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education, as well as clinical departments and other units within the SOM. The Assistant Dean will support the Vice Dean in strategic planning, budget management, human resource management, compliance, facilities management, and IT management for the center. The Assistant Dean will participate in the program of continuous quality improvement and compliance with the accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The Assistant Dean liaises with other offices, departments in the School of Medicine and the University, and affiliates and community partners.

 The ideal candidate will:

  • Oversee all administrative operations of the Clinical Skills and Simulation center including: human resources, financing, facilities, compliance, and evaluation
  • Provide learners the opportunity to study clinical skills through a variety of methods, including standardized patients, task trainers, and low- and hi-fidelity simulators.
  • Support Undergraduate Medical Education by integrating clinical skills and simulation training education across all four years of the MD curriculum.
  • Expand opportunities for interprofessional training by having medical students learn with other healthcare students
  • In collaboration with the Office of Graduate Medical Education, provide services and support to UNLV residency and fellowship training programs, including skills training
  • In collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs, support Continuing Medical Education by offering services and support to UNLV faculty, community faculty, and health care organizations.
  • Develop clinical skills and simulation training programs to support the educational needs of community partners.
  • Provide research opportunities for students, faculty, residents and fellows.
  • Engage in scholarly activities in their areas of expertise
  • Deliver papers or presentations at professional meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Contributes to service through groups and committees

PROFILE of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine

Located primarily within the Las Vegas Medical District, the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV graduated its first class of students in May of 2021. Fully accredited, the school currently has 240 medical students, 150 faculty physicians, and more than 300 medical residents and fellows. With a new medical education building opened in 2023, including state-of-the-art medical classrooms and simulation center, the school continues to grow.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position requires an MD or relevant degree
  • 3-5 years or more of experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting
  • Record of leadership in medical education at an LCME accredited medical school
  • Significant background in clinical skills and simulation training
  • Evidence of scholarship/research productivity and significant teaching contributions in his/her field
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and commitment to diversity

The candidate’s educational credentials, terminal degree, experience in an academic medical institution or equivalency will be considered in determining that candidate’s recommended rank.  The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (FAPT) Committee will use the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (SOM) promotion criteria to recommend rank to the Dean of the School of Medicine.  Tenure consideration may be given upon hire on a case by case basis depending on verified previous credentials, the FAPT recommendation, and School of Medicine Dean’s recommendation.
