DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Technology department is a strategic partner with BCI’s business areas. It enables investment processes and business activities that contribute to the achievement of BCI’s mission and long-term goals. The department creates the digital capabilities that support and enable BCI to innovate, modernize service and product offerings guided by best practices, and drive a digitally empowered workplace through new collaboration and productivity ecosystems. The department is also responsible for providing the foundational infrastructure, systems, business applications, and advanced technologies for the front, middle, and back office.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Business Solutions Analyst is responsible for conducting business and user analysis for an assigned client area and portfolio of applications and processes. The Business Solutions Analyst develops an in-depth understanding of client area goals, objectives, and needs and creates the key business solution artifacts that are needed to enable application and process development and enhancements. Where needed, the Business Solutions Analyst will also directly perform low/no code development or system-specific design and configuration.

S/he/they will collaborate with business and technology teams to define and deliver projects, with potential to participate in an on-call rotation in support of business-critical processes.

  • Level 1: Responsible for business solutions analysis and contributes to projects with a low-to-mid level of complexity, typically acquired through 3+ years of experience. Works under guidance, applies business solutions analysis key concepts effectively, and has an experienced level of competency within the role.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Arts, Technology, Computer Science or a related field

  • At least three years experience in a similar role as a Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, Product Owner, or Technical Project Lead with hands-on experience producing business and user analysis

  • Experience with Agile methods (Scrum and/or Kanban) and/or DevSecOps practices is an asset.

  • Ability to design, lead, and facilitate meetings and workshops with stakeholders and present technical details to non-technical audiences

  • Ability to work through ambiguous situations and multitask in a fast-paced environment

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills, facilitation and presentation skills, listening skills, and problem-solving skills and abilities

  • Experience with hybrid technical environments and foundational knowledge of cyber security, cloud platforms, and the software development lifecycle

  • Experience delivering technology solutions to the investment management industry is an asset, including public market trading, investment risk, private markets, investment & client reporting, valuations & fund accounting

  • Professional certifications or training in Business Analysis (IIBA, PBA, etc.) or Agile methods (Agile Leadership, CSM, CSPO, etc.) is an asset

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

The following responsibilities are illustrative of a standard Level 2 and may be scaled down in leadership, complexity, and autonomy.

Business Solutions Analysis

  • Builds an in-depth knowledge of assigned business client area goals, objectives, needs, applications and business processes

  • Engages both business and technical stakeholders to elicit and capture business user needs and requirements, and technical expectations

  • Designs, leads, and facilitates stakeholder meetings including conducting workshops, planning sessions, interviews, focus groups, demos, and/or conducting reviews of existing applications, processes, and artifacts

  • Captures the results of stakeholder engagement efforts in a clear and concise form and validates needs, requirements, and expectations to ensure they meet desired outcomes

  • Develops the key artifacts needed to enable application development and enhancements including designs, prototypes, mock-ups, user analysis, user personas, user journey maps, user stories, etc.

  • Develops the key artifacts needed to enable business process development and enhancements including business rules, process workflows, process dependency maps, etc.

  • Performs system-specific analysis, low-code/no-code development, testing, configuration, production support, and provides technical guidance to others as needed  

  • Advances Agile delivery practices and continuously improves delivery performance through delivery reporting and tracking, backlog development and grooming, sprint or increment planning, and participating in retrospectives

  • Acts as a subject matter expert and provides support, ad hoc training and guidance to business users and others to enable and increase adoption of Agile methods

Quality Assurance

  • Integrates quality assurance techniques into business solutions analysis including behaviour-driven design (user-focused) and test-driven design (developer focused), as applicable 

  • Supports quality assurance and testing activities throughout the solution development process and communicates with delivery teams on defects, issues, and resolution paths

  • Leverages technical diagrams, application models, and historical test results to create and improve quality assurance and testing plans, automated scripts, and programs

  • Supports the development of guidelines and practices that reduce technology operational risk (e.g. release management, test management)

  • Maps and documents business processes, identifies inefficiencies and proposes improvements (business process mapping)

  • Provides input on quality assurance standards, processes, and procedures

Other

  • Proactively identifies risks and issues and proposes solutions to remove barriers to delivery

  • Ensures technical artifacts are accurate, accessible, maintained and communicated

  • Undertakes special projects or assignments as required

  • Performs other related duties as required

ASSIGNED FOCUS AREAS

For all levels, additional expertise or experience is required in one or more of the following client area portfolios and related technologies.

  • Internal Business Partners:

    • Front Office: Demonstrated experience with business applications and processes for Public Markets, Private Equity, Infrastructure & Renewable Resources or Investment Strategy & Risk. Knowledge of Bloomberg AIM and e-trading networks is an asset.

    • Middle Office: Demonstrated experience with business applications and processes for Corporate & Investor Relations, Human Resources, Legal Affairs, or Corporate Risk & Audit. Knowledge of Workday is an asset.

    • Back Office: Demonstrated experience with business applications and processes for Finance, Investment Operations, Corporate Data & Operations, or within Technology Departments. Knowledge of SimCorp Dimension is an asset.

  • Market Information & Investment Technology Solutions: Demonstrated experience with master data management applications and processes for acquiring, validating, mastering, and distributing investment industry information (i.e., securities, prices, parties, indices, etc.) for operational system integration, analysis, and reporting purposes. Expertise in SQL is an asset.

  • Digital Workplace: Demonstrated experience with collaboration and productivity applications and processes for enterprise operations. Knowledge of Microsoft 365 is an asset.

  • Services Management: Demonstrated experience with service management applications and processes for enterprise operations. Knowledge of ServiceNow is an asset.

SALARY RANGE

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.

The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $87,000 to $105,000.

The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.

We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we compete for talent and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.

Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience and expertise.
