The Senior Manager, Economic & Industry Insights, is a key contributor to the Economic & Industry Insights team, responsible for producing data-driven analysis, generating actionable insights, and contributing to thought leadership that serves both internal and external stakeholders. This role takes a holistic approach to measuring and interpreting the automotive ecosystem—connecting macroeconomic conditions, consumer behavior, and industry-specific trends to inform strategic business decisions across Cox Automotive.
The ideal candidate sits at the intersection of data science, economics, and automotive domain expertise, with a forward-leaning approach to leveraging artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. You will leverage large-scale proprietary and third-party datasets—augmented by AI-powered tools and workflows—to surface insights for the Chief Economist, internal business partners, and external audiences including media, OEMs, dealers, and industry analysts. You will produce analysis that translates complex data into compelling narratives, supporting Cox Automotive’s position as a trusted source of industry intelligence.
Success in this role requires intellectual curiosity, analytical rigor, and the ability to independently manage end-to-end research—from data acquisition and transformation through statistical analysis and final presentation. You should be equally comfortable writing SQL queries, building analytical models, deploying AI and machine learning tools to accelerate research, and presenting findings to senior leadership or external media.
What You’ll Do
Data Analysis & Research
Independently source, extract, clean, transform, and analyze large-scale datasets from proprietary and third-party sources to generate insights on automotive market dynamics. Partner with internal data teams to acquire, integrate, and maintain the data feeds that power team deliverables.
Own, maintain, and enhance recurring published data products—such as proprietary indices, market intelligence reports, and analytical frameworks—that track key industry metrics including sales volumes, transaction prices, inventory levels, affordability, credit conditions, and consumer sentiment.
Apply statistical and econometric methods to identify trends, test hypotheses, and quantify relationships across economic and automotive variables.
Develop and maintain automated data pipelines, dashboards, and reporting tools—incorporating AI-assisted workflows where appropriate—to improve team efficiency, scalability, and data accessibility.
Evaluate, adopt, and champion AI and generative AI tools (e.g., large language models, coding assistants, automated research agents) to enhance analytical productivity across the team. This includes connecting AI directly to production data environments to replicate, accelerate, and scale existing analytical workflows.
Insights & Thought Leadership
Produce and deliver research reports, market commentaries, and presentations that translate complex analytical findings into concise, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
Represent Cox Automotive as a visible thought leader through recurring industry conference presentations, webinars, published articles, and direct media engagement. Serve as a credible, quotable voice on market trends for trade and national press.
Monitor and interpret macroeconomic indicators, monetary policy developments, and consumer trends, connecting their implications to automotive market performance.
Surface emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to the Chief Economist and senior leadership to support strategic decision-making.
Stakeholder Engagement & Consulting
Serve as a subject matter resource for internal teams—including product, sales, marketing, and corporate strategy—by providing data-driven answers to ad-hoc business questions.
Partner with cross-functional teams to scope analytical projects, define requirements, and deliver insights that support client-facing and internal initiatives.
Build and maintain advisory relationships with internal and external stakeholders—including OEMs, dealer groups, lenders, and financial institutions—providing executive-level analytical support on market positioning, pricing strategy, and economic conditions.
Develop subject matter expertise across Cox Automotive’s portfolio of businesses and the broader automotive value chain.
Occasional travel may be required for conferences, client meetings, or team events.
Who You Are
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or equivalent quantitative discipline.
Master’s degree in an analytical discipline strongly preferred.
Minimum 7 years of experience in economics, market research, strategy, finance, or a related analytical field, with demonstrated experience working with large-scale datasets to generate business insights.
Track record of producing data-driven research, publications, or analysis consumed by senior leadership, external clients, or media audiences.
Experience owning or contributing to recurring, published data products (e.g., indices, dashboards, market reports) with defined production schedules and external audiences preferred.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analysis; experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) preferred.
Experience with statistical or econometric software and/or visualization tools such as R, Python, Tableau, or Alteryx.
Familiarity with economic and industry data sources (e.g., Moody’s Analytics, S&P Global Mobility, Experian, Equifax, BLS, FRED, Census Bureau).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Demonstrated experience or strong interest in applying AI/ML tools—including generative AI, large language models, and automation frameworks—to accelerate research, data analysis, and content production. Experience connecting AI tools to live data environments (e.g., Snowflake, cloud warehouses) is a strong plus.
Core Competencies
Strong data profiling skills and statistical literacy to independently assess data quality, validity, and explanatory power.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Intellectual curiosity, a growth mindset toward emerging technologies—particularly AI—and a proactive approach to identifying analytical opportunities and challenging assumptions.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with and influence stakeholders across organizational levels.
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
Thrives as part of a collaborative, high-energy team while also capable of working independently with minimal direction.
