Student, GIS Developer – Hybrid

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting a Summer Student to join our innovative Information Management & Technology team. As a Student GIS Developer, you will assist with the development and support of the projects and services of the GIS practice team. You will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a practical setting, while further developing your technical skills. In this role, you will contribute to the creation of GIS solutions that support the AER’s mandate to facilitate the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of energy and mineral resources in Alberta.

What your day-to-day will look like:

• Assist in the development and implementation of GIS-based solutions for various projects.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate GIS data into operational processes.

• Apply critical thinking and problem-solving techniques to address a range of GIS challenges.

• Create detailed maps to analyze geographic patterns, supporting AER’s business processes.

• Utilize relational database management systems and GIS software applications to solve complex spatial problems.

What we’re looking for in you:

• Currently enrolled in your fourth year of a Bachelor’s program in GIS Technology, Computer Science or Management information systems (MIS), or a related field.

• Relevant educational experience in GIS concepts, spatial data analysis, and hands-on experience with GIS software and programming languages such as Python, R, JavaScript, C#, and SQL is preferred.

• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

• Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
