ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the SVP, Strategy & Consulting, this role is responsible for working with Pfizer Executive Leadership (incl. CEO and ELT), a wide range of Corporate Functions, and with Pfizer Research and Development (PRD) to shape, develop, and enable execution of strategies to advance and grow Pfizer’s overall business as well as enhance the productivity and efficiency of our end-to-end PRD engine.

The scope of the role includes support for and requests from the CEO, the Pfizer Board of Directors, the ELT, enterprise-level initiatives related to a broad range of Corporate Functions (e.g., Corporate Affairs, Digital, Finance, People Experience), as well as strategic support for Pfizer’s Chief Scientific Officer and his Leadership Team.

The role has four key accountabilities: 1) Facilitate the development and refresh of the Corporate Strategic Plan (CSP), 2) Manage large cross-functional projects related to key strategic issues/priorities at the Pfizer enterprise level, 3) Lead high-impact strategy initiatives in support of key PRD priorities, and 4) Provide insight into the impact of external market, competitive and R&D-related considerations that could impact Pfizer’s end-to-end business performance or strategic direction.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and facilitate the development of Pfizer’s annual corporate strategic plan to maximize growth and profitability of the company’s total revenue base and product portfolio. Deliver an accompanying strategy action plan that enables execution of these strategies.
  • Lead a complex portfolio of ELT/ELT-1 strategy projects that provide insight and direction for key strategic levers such as market-shaping and development, expanding into new business segments, customer needs assessment, competitive advantage, market and/or product prioritization, enterprise digital strategies, Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) strategies, Research and TA strategies, and novel clinical trial paradigms.
  • Analyze and draw insights related to Pfizer’s overall financial performance, including revenue growth, profitability, cash flow and Total Shareholder Return (TSR).  Leverage these insights to inform overall corporate strategy as well as specific actions to bolster future business performance and outlook.
  • Partner with Pfizer’s Chief Scientific Officer and other PRD leaders on strategies to shape our Research and Development engine, including TA/DA priorities, strategic technology/modality bets, investment allocation between internal and external innovation, ways to maximize the value/impact of our clinical pipeline, and optimize our clinical development engine across dimensions of quality, speed and cost.
  • Provide insights into potential impact of external market, competitive and R&D signals on future business performance of the company.
  • Develop and bring to bear deep expertise in market dynamics to identify key trends and appropriately assess opportunities and guide strategic direction.
  • Develop external relationships to gather perspectives on the diverse business ecosystem outside of Pfizer to shape future strategies and corporate direction.
  • Collaborate with other strategy leads to identify opportunities across Pfizer for alignment or synergies across strategic imperatives.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Strategy & Consulting leadership team, helping shape the priorities and direction of this critical function.
  • Lead and develop a team of 12-13 colleagues (incl. people managers), coaching and developing them to build capability and deliver exceptional performance.
  • Create an engaging, productive, and balanced work environment where team members are encouraged and motivated to collaborate and excel.
  • From time to time, manage and provide oversight and direction to teams from external strategy consulting firms.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • MBA or other advanced degree with 12+ years of experience, or BA/BS with 15 or more years, including experience in the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry.
  • Understands trends in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, aware of competitor strategies, knowledge of healthcare dynamics in the US and other major global markets, and understands key frameworks related to corporate strategy, R&D, commercialization, and business development.
  • Ability to engage with and influence decision-making at all levels of the organization (CEO, ELT, R&D LT, Corporate Function heads and other functional counterparts). Must be able to persuade and influence executive leaders across Corporate, Commercial and Research & Development.
  • Ability to lead a broad portfolio of complex strategic initiatives sponsored by executive leaders and be able to effectively connect the dots/ identify synergies across these initiatives.
  • Demonstration of strong strategic thinking skills, as evidenced by the ability to identify scenarios, implications, and recommendations for direction or action.
  • Ability to understand and translate market and competitive dynamics as well as key R&D trends into strategic implications for Pfizer Inc and its Divisions.
  • Strong understanding of financial implications of any strategy at the corporate or R&D level.
  • Ability to work with complex information (both quantitative and qualitative) and distill into frameworks that help facilitate executive-level decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead with indirect authority.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills sufficient to address CEO, ELT, Board of Directors, PRD LT, and external audiences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Life sciences or healthcare-related degree helpful.
  • Prior experience in strategy consulting strongly preferred.

  • Some ability and willingness to travel is required.
  • This position is located on-premise, and qualifies for relocation.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $262,100.00 to $436,800.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 30.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
