Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of a Pharmacist, performs a variety of functions related to preparation, storage, distribution and dispensing of prescriptions. Within the Hospital, rotation through IV admixture and unit dose service is routine. Rotation to OR Pharmacy Services and Outpatient Pharmacy Services may be required. Performs data entry and other record keeping functions as determined to be necessary to the operations of the department.

Essential Functions

  • Hospital In-Patient Pharmacy:

    1. Fills medication orders including oral, injectable and topical medications and intravenous admixtures.
    2. Assists in the bulk manufacturing of special pharmaceutical products
    3. Prepares and distributes floor stock items in response to requisition forms.
    4. Inventories and restocks shelves in immediate work area, checks for outdated drugs.
    5. Enters charges and credits into the computer for all medications and IV admixtures dispensed from the Pharmacy, documents all medications and IV solutions returned to the Pharmacy.
    6. Distributes prepared medications to patient care areas and/or other departments of the Hospital.
    7. Performs necessary record keeping functions.
    8. Answers telephone and assists at Pharmacy window.
    9. May rotate within hospital and out-patient pharmacy service areas as required.
    10. Maintains the work area in a safe, orderly manner.
    11. Follows appropriate clean room (797) guidelines in the preparation of intravenous admixtures.
  • Outpatient Pharmacy:

    1. Fills medication orders including oral, injectable and topical medications and intravenous admixtures.
    2. Enters patient demographics, insurance information and prescriptions into the pharmacy information system, prioritizing scripts for customers waiting. Appropriately handles and reprocesses rejected claims.
    3. Processes prescriptions, retrieves correct medication, fills and labels prescription and attaches any necessary notifications.
    4. Files completed scripts in the patient pickup bins after pharmacist verification.
    5. Answers telephone and assists customers at the lobby counter and Pharmacy drive-through window.
    6. Updates and electronically transmits the daily drug order – monitors and documents/communicates special orders and shortages.
    7. Processes daily drug order from wholesaler, stocks drug shelves, checks for outdated drugs, logs controlled drugs and files invoices. Contacts supplier to resolve discrepancies on invoice.
    8. Distributes prepared medications to patient care areas, patient bedside and/or other departments of the Hospital.
    9. Reconciles cash drawer twice daily (opening and closing) and documents per policy. Performs other record keeping duties as required.
    10. Assists in training of new staff and a resource for IT support personal.
    11. Maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner.
    12. Cleaning and dusting of work areas and shelves. Disinfecting of high touch points such as counters, credit card devices, phones, counting utensils and signature pads.
    13. May rotate to other outpatient pharmacy sites/home delivery pharmacy as needed.

Qualifications

  • Required A level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of a general high school diploma program or GED.
  • Experience with sterile compounding and/or 6 months technician experience and/or graduate of an ASHP accredited technician training program. Preferred
  • LIC-Pharmacy Technician - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
