The Opportunity

This position works out of our Ottawa, Ontario location in the Point of Care, Diagnostics division. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life.   Our Point of Care diagnostic portfolio spans key health and therapeutic areas, including Chemistry, Electrolytes, Hematology, Blood Gases, Coagulation, Endocrinology, Cardiac Markers, Neurology, and Informatics.   As a member of our In-House Blood Specimen Collection Study staff, you will play a role in supporting scheduling, study staff activities and phlebotomy to support our Principal Investigator and donors.  You will communicate with a variety of donors both internally and externally to achieve the objectives of the In-House study which supports the business objectives.  This position will be part-time with a minimum of 16  hours per week;  working primarily evenings and weekends with the possibility of up to 40 hours per week for vacation/sick coverage.

What You’ll Do

  • Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.

  • Ensure donor needs are met internally and externally during the act of phlebotomy to support the In-House Blood Collection study.

  • Maintain open communication with the donors, testing staff and the Principal Investigator.

  • Schedule internal/external donors for the various phlebotomy locations to ensure that the scheduled work can be met.

  • Maintain and review various study records. Preserve and safeguard all confidential information.

  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.

  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement processes to comply with study procedures.

  • Maintain phlebotomy areas and inventory and communicate status with study team.

  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.

  • Manage timelines for multiple tasks with strong prioritization skills that align to the overall department and business objectives (phlebotomy and study staff activities).

  • Ability to handle unexpected adverse events and is able to exercise independent thought and actions when necessary.

  • Demonstrate flexibility to support the business, as required when additional hours are needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Certificate indicating that you are trained in the act of phlebotomy

  • 5+ years of recent experience collecting blood by venipuncture

  • Ability to interact positively with blood donors

  • Experience in handling adverse events (phlebotomy)

  • Health and Safety training for a phlebotomy or laboratory setting

  • Attention to detail and labeling during specimen collection

  • Ability to coordinate and organize tasks

  • Able to work independently and also successfully as part of a team

  • Knowledge of: MS Office (Outlook, Excel and Word)

  • Experience working in an ISO and FDA regulated environment is an asset
