Position Title:                        Director of Marketing & Communications

Department:                          Convention and Visitor’s Bureau

Reports To:                            President/CEO, GOCVB & OCC

Classification:                        Full-time, Exempt

Compensation:                      Annual Salary up to $140,000.00

Position Description:            The Director of Communications will lead the development and execution of a broad-based communications plan to raise destination awareness and meet business objectives.  They will plan, coordinate and manage public relations activity to support the destination marketing for sales meetings, conventions, tradeshows and special events for the Ontario Convention Center and Greater Ontario Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop broad communications strategies to increase awareness of Ontario as a destination for business and leisure travel with consumer, trade and business press, bloggers and influencers.
  • Create public relations strategies that maximize coverage to drive attendance at/participation in key special events.
  • Research, write, edit and service press releases, media alerts, newsletters, company communications and other projects as needed. 
  • Produce videos and podcasts as needed.
  • Position GOCVB leadership as industry sales and marketing thought leaders.
  • Coordinate press trips and visits for groups and individual journalists.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Develop appropriate positioning for the organization, with leadership team and staff as needed. 
  • Maintain a crisis communications plan and lead crisis communication responses in conjunction with leadership team.  
  • Oversee social media messaging and audience development. 
  • Oversee development of corporate communications materials including the annual report.
  • Serves as a primary spokesperson and lead point person to organizations, governmental bodies, managers, prospective clients, on media interactions and at social and business gatherings.  
  • Assists in budget development and control; maintains records and prepares reports. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a strategic public relations and marketing plan.
  • Establish tracking procedures with departments and report progress in achieving all measurable goals contained in the marketing plan. 
  • Concentrate on pitching editorial ideas to publications in which advertising is being placed.  Create relationships with sales representatives, editors and writers to ensure that Ontario is top of mind.  Monitor and report garnered media from publications within the media budget.
  • Assists in developing marketing budget and development of media schedule. 
  • Establish and sustain professional relationships with media personnel, including newspaper, magazines, television and radio.
  • Maintain updated media lists and monitor media outreach activities.
  • Monitor and track publications to ensure that the CVB is receiving fair and balanced coverage, as well as keeping information current.
  • Prepare monthly reports and clipping recap for senior management. Maintain an updated media placement book, CVB photo library and media databases.
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Education, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum 10 years of proven PR leadership experience in the tourism industry
  • Experience building overall destination visibility and managing destination reputation through high-impact media relations and communications programs.
  • Strong tourism industry media/press relations experience.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills and demonstrated experience as a company spokesperson.
  • Demonstrated experience with integrating messaging on traditional and non-traditional (social media) communications channels.
  • Ability to effectively interface with senior management and City leaders.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Operate a personal computer using Microsoft Office, and other standard office equipment, including typewriter, copy machine and fax machine.
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
  • Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.

Work Environment

  • Position requires sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Daily sitting, focusing on and operating a personal computer or terminal keyboard to enter data for aver 60 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to read printed words and numbers in printed form and on computer/terminal monitor.
  • This position is within an office environment, however, requires in and out of doors several times a day.

  • Ability to meet a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends and available on-call for emergencies by telephone and/or cell phone.
