Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center is a nationally recognized academic medical center, nationally verified Level 1 Trauma Center, Magnet ® hospital for nursing, and serves a service area of 30 counties and a population of nearly 750,000 persons. The Trauma Research Program advances trauma care through multidisciplinary, ACS-compliant research activities. The program integrates surgical subspecialties, residents, and clinical teams and is supported by the Atrium Health System Research Department. Using trauma registry data, PIPS processes, and TQIP participation, the program drives performance improvement and research initiatives. Productivity is demonstrated through ongoing peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts, and resident-led scholarly activity, contributing to improved outcomes and advancement of trauma science.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Ensures research staff are properly trained and efficiently utilized.
  • Provides management for research financial operations. Works with finance and accounting to ensure that all research grants and professional service agreements are properly accounted for.
  • Serves as resource to Principal Investigators who are conducting research utilizing resources, including establishing and maintaining a contractual relationship with Professional Services Agreements with those Principal Investigators.
  • Works with Principal Investigators and legal to establish and maintain a contractual relationship between Principal Investigator and organization for resources and patient populations utilized for research activities.   Assures compliance with regulations and policies governing the conduct of research activities.
  • Assures compliance and quality assurance in the management of clinical research funds.
  • Maintains and updates knowledge of federal and state compliance laws, regulations and legislation.
  • Responsible for ensuring Clinical Trial Agreements (CTAs) meet federal, state and hospital compliance standards and are financially viable.
  • Assists Corporate Compliance and administrative staff with compliance & research related issues as needed.
  • Recommends to senior management opportunities for participation in relevant research, approval/denial of research proposals to IRB based on financial analysis and potential risks.  Responsible for ensuring customer service excellence through effective resolution of participant-generated opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist administrative staff with compliance & research related issues as needed.  Monitors research participants’ satisfaction utilizing established tools and communicates performance to Department.
  • Maintains and updates knowledge of federal and state compliance laws, regulations and legislation.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to advance clinical research. Effectively collaborates and communicates applicable research vision, goals and objectives with affiliated clinicians, institutional administration, and private practitioners.
  • Responsible for the financial and compliance components of developing new off-site clinical research areas. 
  • Assists with strategic development of new research projects and assures the viability of extant projects, as needed. Develops proposals for ongoing research infrastructure needs.
  • Actively analyzes environment for opportunities and threats to clinical research activities.
  • Responsible for the coordination of clinical research and management of financial operations within area and affiliated off-site research entities.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required: 

RN

Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree required or educational equivalent, with emphasis on research, financial operations and compliance.

Experience Required:

 Requires a minimum of three years in the functional area with previous supervisory experience, project management and/or responsible for critical initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with financial modeling and accounting principles guiding research in hospital and academic settings.  Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state compliance laws, regulations and legislation.  Knowledge of medical terminology, familiarity with CPT and HCPCS codes, HIPPA compliance issues, and exposure to clinical operations preferred.  Advanced computer skills with spreadsheet and database knowledge.

Demonstrated ability to maintain effective relationships with staff, physicians, patients and the public.  Strong negotiation, communication, and mediation skills. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer and hard copy materials.  Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours).  Must be able to comprehend and learn operation of various office equipment.  Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60 lbs.  Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics. Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs.
