Responsibilities:
This position will perform a variety of duties related to the protection of life and property on the Mercer University campus. Assist with prevention of crime, preservation of the public peace, calls for service, and basic security services in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Mercer Police department and in compliance with governing federal and state laws. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: supervisor and co-workers, Mercer employees, students and campus visitors.
The Mercer University Police Department adopts a community policing strategy which promotes problem solving techniques to reduce fear of crime and improve quality of life and police services, through a proactive reliance on community resources that addresses crime causing conditions.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma/GED or Vocational School Diploma and some relevant experience are required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must be able to perform the duties of a security guard which may include but are not limited to: walking on active patrol, running after violators, sitting for long periods, climbing steps or fences, crawling, moving furniture or other heavy objects, writing reports, maintaining physical control of combative persons, operating police radio, monitoring video surveillance system, placing tape and cones for traffic flow control, checking condition of vehicles and other equipment, locking and unlocking doors and gates, performing jump starts on vehicles, escorting sick or frightened students, input casebook data, distributing keys for other departments, issuing parking decals, assisting the Mercer Police department when requested and available, interviewing persons connected to incidents, transporting university personnel and property, cleaning, directing emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances, and other duties as required.
Must be able to maintain control of tense and/or dangerous situations through psychological discipline and techniques to prevent escalation.
Must be able to adapt to instant changes in situations, i.e., from standing still watching something to having to chase someone who has committed a crime.
Must be able to accept unforeseen changes in scheduling in order to provide adequate coverage of campus.
Ability to work well with people and have strong communication skills.
Highly attentive and observant, with the ability to detect abnormal activity.
Possess knowledge of or have the ability to learn laws and law enforcement practices.
Possess strong decision-making skills, and are capable of judgment in difficult situations.
