Job Summary:

A Pathologists' Assistant is an intensively trained allied health professional who provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a licensed, board-certified or board-eligible Pathologist. A Pathologists' Assistant is qualified to perform all of the surgical and autopsy functions of a Pathologist leading up to, but not including, the diagnosis. This position also serves as the direct supervisor for the grossing room, autopsy, and frozen section labs. The Pathologists' Assistant provides direct supervision to the pathology residents (2-3 per year for 4 years) and Grossing Room technical staff. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director, Pathology Services.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Performs supervisory/management duties including oversight of the general day-to-day operations of the surgical pathology labs (i.e. Gross Room, Autopsy, Frozen Section Labs). Including but not limited to employee competency assessments, annual employee reviews, vacation and shift coverage management, and performance counseling. Participates in and assists pathologists in frozen sections, intraoperative consultations, and prenatal procedures. Preparation, gross description, and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens. Preparation of human postmortem examinations. Instruction of anatomy and physiology, gross pathology, photography and gross dissection skills for surgical specimens as well as autopsy techniques. Maintenance of surgical/autopsy pathology protocols, procedures, reports and data, assures proper maintenance of equipment, assures provision of adequate supplies for and cleanliness of the surgical and autopsy suites, performs budgetary duties and assists in preparation for accreditation inspections (CAP, Joint Commission). Procurement of tissue for biorepository banking. Other duties as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Other or Masters Other
  • or Doctorate Other-Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
  • Pathologists' Assistant within 1-1/2 Yrs

Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

Required Minimum Experience:

Bachelor's degree or Master of Science from NAACLS accredited Pathologist's Assistant training program. Required Minimum 3 years in Anatomic Surgical Pathology Preferred

Required Minimum Skills:

Advanced Microscopy, Gross Disection, and Medical Terminology
