At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a unique and highly skilled team, you’ll be responsible for structural design of space launch vehicle primary and secondary structures.  This is a hands-on position that involves complete ownership of hardware from conceptual design to flight.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Own the entire design cycle of structural subsystems, including conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing, and qualification.
  • Generate and release 3-D models, component drawings, assembly drawings, and interface control documents.
  • Hand calc and FE analysis of primary and secondary aerospace structures.
  • Plan and execute development and qualification test activities.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders in pursuit of systemwide-optimized design, manufacturing, and operations execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 5+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle, or automotive structures.
  • Demonstrated examples of primary structure release and qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with metallic part fabrication.
  • Strong mechanical design skills using 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with classical aerospace structures analysis techniques, e.g. Bruhn, Roarks, Niu.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and drawing standards to ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with development and/or qualification testing (test requirements, setup/configuration, test predictions, test conduct/monitoring, etc.).
  • Familiarity with composite and metallic manufacturing techniques.
  • Familiarity with bonded and bolted joint design, mechanics, and relevant analysis techniques.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with composite part fabrication.
  • Proficiency with Creo Parametric.
  • Familiarity with FEA codes, e.g. Ansys, HyperMesh/Optistruct, or Abaqus.
  • Experience with optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing.
