Summary 

MasterControl is looking for a Principal Engineer for our Data Platform Operations team. This role will provide technical leadership in designing and implementing scalable, robust, and efficient data infrastructure solutions that power our next generation of applications and agentic capabilities. As the Principal Engineer, you will provide technical vision and expertise for our cloud-based data and AIML systems and infrastructure, establish architectural standards, and ensure our data platform delivers operational excellence, reliability, performance, and scalability at scale. This position reports to the Sr Director of Data Platform within the Engineering organization. 

 Responsibilities 

  • Define and evolve architectural standards, patterns, and best practices for our data platform and infrastructure, ensuring alignment with broader engineering strategies 
  • Drive technical decision-making through a systematic approach balancing business requirements, scalability, cost-efficiency, and operational excellence 
  • Design and implement scalable data processing systems that handle complex workflows with high availability and fault tolerance to serve analytic and agentic consumers 
  • Provide technical leadership for deployment and management of production-quality data systems, including monitoring, scaling, and performance optimization 
  • Design scalable infrastructure as code approaches for data platform resource provisioning and management 
  • Develop and maintain reference architectures and technical documentation that clearly communicate complex systems and data flows 
  • Implement software engineering best practices for data management, including CI/CD, automation, version control, and testing 
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions and architectural roadmaps using a data first approach 
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies to enhance performance, maintainability, and reliability of our data systems 
  • Mentor and develop team members through architectural guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing 
  • Collaborate with security teams to establish and maintain robust data protection measures across all platform components 

 Core Competencies 

  • Expert knowledge of distributed data processing systems, data pipelines, and storage technologies 
  • Deep expertise with AWS including S3, EC2, IAM, RDS, Kubernetes and container orchestration 
  • Expertise with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) 
  • Strong background in continuous integration, deployment automation, and DevOps methodologies 
  • Experience implementing comprehensive monitoring and alerting solutions 
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, and container orchestration patterns 
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases  
  • Familiarity with vector databases and embedding workflows, semantic search and hybrid search strategies. 
  • Strong programming skills with experience in multiple modern languages 
  • Understanding of experience implementing Data Security, Regulatory and Compliance best practices 

 Qualifications 

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field 
  • 10+ years of large scale software development experience with at least 5+ years focused on data platforms and infrastructure 
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and operating large-scale data processing systems 
  • Experience designing highly available systems utilizing load balancing, horizontal scalability, and redundancy 
  • Strong background in cloud architecture with extensive AWS implementation experience 
  • Proven record of implementing Infrastructure as Code and automation solutions 
  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams 
  • Excellent collaboration, presentation and verbal and written communication skills

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $200,000 - $250,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
