The Structured Finance and Derivatives (SFD) team is part of our market-leading Capital Markets practice. The Tokyo SFD team is seeking an outstanding lawyer from a finance or corporate background who has the talent, flexibility and passion to join this cutting-edge practice and to structure and deliver more firsts for our clients. We are looking for candidates who have 0-2 years’ PQE, who are self-starters, and who demonstrate an imaginative and commercial approach, combining a high level of legal awareness with a commitment to delivering the highest quality standards to our clients. 

Key Responsibilities and Challenges

Technical

• A sophisticated understanding of legal concepts and the ability to apply these to transactions in a pragmatic fashion
• Exceptional drafting skills using the correct precedents
• The ability to understand complex structures and transaction processes and align with commercial objectives and legal constraints
• Managing transaction workflow
• Taking instructions internally or externally
• Researching the appropriate primary and secondary sources to correctly identify and analyse issues
• Meeting deadlines

Client Relationship Management

• Delivering for clients in a consistently calm, professional and pragmatic manner in a way that places the client at the centre
• Relaying client feedback to the responsible Partner
• Building and maintaining co-operative, communicative relationships with the client team
• Contributing effectively in client meetings

Business Development

• Maintaining knowledge of latest commercial and legal intelligence or market situation and its impact on the business
• Participating in recruitment initiatives, client marketing and developing networks with other professionals, participating at conferences or professional organisations
• Identifying opportunities for and being proactive in obtaining further work

Characteristics & Skills required

Experience

• NQ - 2 years’ PQE on UK scale
• Common law, E&W or Australia qualified
• Experience in Structured Finance & Derivatives
• Experience in Japan market is ideal although not a must

Languages/Language proficiency

• Essential: Excellent English language and grammar

Skills

• Transaction management
• Concise and objective verbal and written communication
• Listening skills
• Knowledge of and experience in using computer systems such as Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office etc.
