Job Description Summary:

Responsible for the achievement of optimal patient outcomes through assisting in the prompt notification of primary care providers and patients of incidental lung nodule findings. The Nurse Navigator is specially trained to assist with appropriate follow up management of lung nodules. The Nurse Navigator is responsible for routine daily operations of the Lung Nodule Clinic. This includes, but is not limited to, organizational planning, scheduling, documentation, prior authorizations and patient care. The position is a service to our patients and local primary care providers. Navigating patients from detection, to follow up testing/ diagnosis and treatment. This position has flexible, non –traditional work hours. The goal of the clinic is to assist in awareness of lung nodule findings while being available to facilitate timely access to care. By detecting lung nodules earlier, we hope to see a shift in lung cancer diagnoses from primarily late stage to earlier stages such as I and II. By providing earlier detection, we expect earlier access to treatment, better prognosis and longer life expectancy for our patients.

Responsibilities

  •  Provides direction and support to patients, families, and healthcare providers by assisting in notification of findings and education.  
  • Reviews referral information to ensure all necessary information is received. 
  • Participates in development of clinical protocols for patients.
  • Coordinates follow up testing and care for patients referred to the Lung Nodule Clinic service.
  • Demonstrates teamwork through interacting with other departments to achieve goals while respecting individual differences, sharing credit and accountability for outcomes. 
  • Exhibits positive interpersonal skills, i.e. professionalism, integrity, and follow through on commitments.
  • Uses effective analytical/critical thinking skills through appropriate analysis, judgment, innovation, and decisiveness.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed. 
  • Communicates with patients and families and collaborates with other disciplines for providing emotional support and teaching.
  •  Serves as liaison between patient, family and providers.
     

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of an associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing required.
  • LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • BS recommended but not required

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 years of nursing experience
