Director of Data Science

The Director of Data Science will support the Membership & Data Science pillar of the Enterprise Analytics Team. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Membership Analytics & Data Science, we are looking for a thought partner who will work with the business to apply Data Science principles and technology to drive business initiatives that will improve member acquisition, engagement, shopping, retention and growth.  In addition, this role will be responsible for helping to envision, build and deploy our next generation of data science tools, which will help us fundamentally transform our business.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Support the enterprise by providing ad hoc data science support inclusive of data engineering, software solutioning, modelling and measurement
  • Govern enterprise-wide testing design and measurement to ensure statistical validity
  • Maintain and build upon our internal data science technologies inclusive of marketing, pricing measurement, consumer insight and digital use cases (MMM/MTA)
  • Partner in the creation of testing plans and deliver timely measurement of performance
  • Ability to frame business problems and decompose their constituent parts for data science analysis and building new solutions
  • Build machine learning models and use applied statistics (supervised/unsupervised learning, lift modeling, linear/nonlinear programming) to support the business
  • Certify all engagement and loyalty testing design/measurement (hypothesis testing, A/B testing, design of experiment, sample size/power calculation)
  • Develop and maintain machine learning pipelines including ETL and ML Ops pipelines
  • Provide opinion on existing and new integrations of 3rd party data science solutions and measurement
  • Ability to communicate data science concepts/insights to non-technical audiences
  • Manage, coach and develop a team of Data Science Managers and Data Scientists

Job Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience of data science/analytics experience, preferably in the retail space
  • 5+ years of experience with progressive management/team lead experience, leading team of 10+, including data science managers
  • Experience working with global and remote teams
  • Track record in building/implementing machine learning algorithms and applications in production
  • Experience guiding teams in addressing technical and delivery challenges
  • Excellent communication and visualization skills
  • Thorough knowledge in statistics and experience with ideating, designing, and analyzing experiments and A/B tests
  • Hands-on coding skills with SQL, Python or R
  • Deep understanding and commitment to software engineering tools/principles/processes (eg., Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, GIT, Jira, Confluence)
  • Eager to learn new algorithms, new application areas and new tools
  • Preferred experience with cloud-computing frameworks (e.g. AWS/GCP/Azure)
  • BSc in Computer Science, engineering (or related area), or equivalent experience

In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is starting from $158,000.00.
