Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE: The Principal Consultant will apply scientific methodology to investigate and determine the cause of complex failures of materials, components, products, and structures, which may lead to legal activity, including both civil and criminal; potentially assisting a court or other parties to determine the facts of a failure or accident. This role should strive to promote and deliver a comprehensive menu of post-loss technical services with a focus on their discipline area for claims executives, senior level adjusters, corporations, and litigators. The Principal Consultant will be called upon to isolate the specific reason or reasons a product or structure failed and/or the reasoning behind the product failing to perform as intended. Principal Consultants will lead large projects with the assistance of others to investigate and document the loss site, to determine causation or reason behind the failure or damages.

Assignments may include the analysis of building property damage cause and origin, personal injuries, and design/installation issues related to design/construction, roofing, exterior facades, and catastrophic claims. In addition to their industry focus, the Principal Consultant should work to fully leverage our existing capabilities across all disciplines, as well as services offered through Expert Alliance.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investigates the origin and cause of failures, damages, or defects in the civil/structural fields within residential, commercial, and industrial sites.
  • Participates in catastrophe responses, such as hurricanes, tornados, floods, wildland fires, and earthquakes.
  • Performs field investigations, leads multi-party examinations, and documentation of damaged property.
  • Researches failure modes and code requirements as needed, prepares recommendations for repair and/or remediation as appropriate.
  • Prepares accurate, clear, thorough, and concise reports and letters outlining the cause and origin of the damages to clients. Follows established policies, procedures, and processes in preparing information, exercising sound judgment in applying these to potentially unusual or

complicated situations, and submits reports and documents in a timely manner and in accordance with client’s standards and expectations.

  • Provides deposition or expert testimony as a fact or expert witness for product liability cases, civil or federal court cases, and, occasionally, criminal cases. Investigates and may testify in a deposition or courtroom setting, about the cause, extent or source of damages or professional liability.
  • Analyzes the failure of building systems, determines the cause of failures, evaluates the quality of construction or reviews design or maintenance procedures.
  • Maintains established relationships with current clients and consultants.
  • Manages and/or works with multi-disciplinary teams on large and complex assignments ensuring cohesive approach to the investigation, while maintaining effective communication across the project team.
  • Understands the services the company can provide and becomes familiar with the various methods used to support client needs. Adapts our services to meet those needs in terms of scope of work, budget, and timing. Understands clients’ needs and specific requirements. Assists with the collection of outstanding invoices, as necessary or instructed.
  • Participates in and drives the development of White Papers, webinar content, internal/external articles, blog posts and promotional and educational seminars. When possible utilizes junior consultants to assist with development.
  • Interacts regularly with members of the business development, sales and marketing teams and stays abreast of trends in the industry. Participates as necessary in business development and marketing endeavors. Identifies and follows up on opportunities in Civil/Structural. Develops list of clients to target to expand network.
  • As instructed by Technical Director, assists with mentoring of junior experts including but not limited to performing peer reviews, assisting other experts on their files, and when applicable, bringing junior experts on the projects.
  • Stays abreast of office and company policies, procedures, and practices; participates in ongoing training and development as assigned or approved to assure knowledge and skills remain current and comprehensive.
  • Adheres to all applicable State Insurance Regulation requirements and other applicable laws, regulations, and standards; assumes personal responsibility for maintaining the requisite state license for the state(s) assigned.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • 7 to 10+ years’ experience is required.
  • 6+ years’ experience in the field of Forensic Engineering.
  • Experience working with law firms and insurance companies.
  • Testimony/deposition experience.
  • Skills in analyzing, interpreting, synthesizing, prioritizing, and reporting pertinent information, discerning the essential from the non-essential, and grasping complexities of unusual or complicated cases.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Exemplary time management and organizational skills, including attention to detail and accuracy, to execute tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Allocates resources appropriately in the face of competing demands.

  • Ability to work in catastrophic environments such as the aftermath of natural disasters, weather events, etc., for an extended period.
  • Capable of operating technical equipment such as cameras, moisture meters, zip-levels, laser type measurement instruments
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook) and CRM software.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and to discreetly handle sensitive information.
  • Teamwork, compassion, and respect toward others, in keeping with our 5 Guiding Principles, as well as integrity, accountability and adherence to standards of ethical behavior and professional conduct, and open and honest communication.
  • Safety mindset with the ability to foresee project risks associated with investigations.
  • Basic understanding of how applicable building codes and ordinances are applied.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in a work capacity.

Preferred Skills/Abilities/Experience:

  • Experience with commercial and industrial facilities is desired.
  • Design combination of residential, commercial, and industrial setting experience is preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related discipline is required.
  • Must have a Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineers (SE) license (in the state of employment is preferred)
