The Department of General and Specialized Surgery evaluates and treats common and complex conditions affecting the abdomen, gastrointestinal system, and breasts. Our experienced caregivers are skilled in minimally invasive methods, including robotic-assisted surgery and laparoscopic surgery. As an Operating Room Service Assistant, your primary duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting in transporting patients and setting up operating rooms.   

  • Maintaining and operating special equipment.  

  • Coordinating equipment and supplies. 

  • Monitoring and tracking the loaning/lending of supplies and equipment.  

  • Providing limited assistance to surgeons, such as holding limbs/retractors, suctioning and sponging wounds.  
     

A caregiver in this position works Days + Call 6:30am- 3:00pm (call required)

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains surgical instrument sets and equipment and ensures proper sterile conditions.
  • Cleans used instruments after surgery. (Process may require assembly and maintenance of some instruments for proper cleaning and sterilization).
  • Ensures proper sterile conditions, orders supplies, stocks, and maintains storage areas in the Operating Room for service.
  • Assists in transporting patients and room turnover.
  • Assists RN in maintaining a safe environment for the patient.
  • Interfaces daily with physicians, staff, vendor sales representatives, sterile processing, and storeroom as a necessary part of routine activities.
  • Ensures proper storage and utilization of service equipment.
  • Ensures service specific supply expiration dates are checked monthly.
  • Coordinates and documents equipment repairs and loaner returns.
  • Works as a liaison to educate staff in the proper use and functioning of equipment.
  • Scrubs in as needed to hold limbs/retractors.
  • Scrubs in as needed for suctioning or sponging of wound.
  • When scrubbed in, will maintain surgical sterility throughout procedure.
  • After procedure, will assist in transferring of patient from surgical table to stretcher or bed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Sterile processing certification or Operating Room Technician (ORT) certification preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Understanding of surgical work flow, surgical terminology, and physician preferences.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion to include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  • Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds ad ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
