Sol Systems is seeking an experienced professional to serve as a Senior Associate for the Sol Trading (“Trading”) team in Washington DC. This position will work directly with the Vice President of Trading to help manage and grow Sol’s portfolio. The position is ideal for an experienced associate looking to expand into trading within a growing company, work in an entrepreneurial environment and help drive Sol’s trading platform into other environmental and energy commodities to diversify the range of commodities that we trade and finance.

Sol Trading (“Trading”), a division of Sol, managers multiple environmental and energy commodity investment portfolios in the renewable energy certificate (“REC”) and power markets.

Founded in 2008, Sol Trading is the oldest division at Sol Systems. The Trading team is an innovative market maker and has helped create multiple state solar renewable energy credit (SREC) markets through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.  We have raised capital from both institutional investors and high net worth individuals for solar projects and energy credit investing. Trading manages multiple renewable energy certificate (“REC”) portfolios and maintains one of the oldest and largest SREC aggregation businesses in the U.S.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading role on trade and transaction analysis including financial modeling, valuation of portfolio acquisitions and strategic analysis of new business opportunities
  • Own and manage transaction execution for trades and acquisitions, including working with team leaders of Sol’s internal review process (legal, risk, finance, credit and operations)
  • Establish new relationships and maintaining existing relationships with compliance entities, natural sellers and other market participants as well as management of Sol Trading’s CRM system 
  • Pro-active market surveillance, analysis and reporting of timely and accurate market information to Trading’s research team 
  • Support spot market execution of Sol’s existing REC and SREC inventory
  • Assist with new business development initiatives in innovative market products, trading of new commodity classes and development of tailored financial products for Sol’s clients 

A successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes: 

  • 5+ years of financial analysis and modeling; analysis of trading strategies and experience with REC production variance a plus
  • Experience trading or originating in the environmental commodity sector; electricity trading a plus; financial trading a plus 
  • Experience trading or analyzing at least three of the following: RECs, SRECs, Carbon Allowances, Carbon Offsets, Electricity, Capacity, Ancillary Services, Transmission; Equities, WREGIS or Green-e experience a plus  
  • Experience with trading operations including contract review, trade settlement, trade record keeping, risk and VaR analysis and income forecasting
  • Existing relationships with other market participants and natural environmental product generators a plus
  • Ability to produce reports and presentations of trading opportunities and to communicate those strategies to Sol’s internal review teams and Investment Committee.
  • Expert at financial modeling and cash flow forecasting 
  • Strong interest in the solar industry 

Location & Hours: This is a full-time role and will be based in our Washington, DC office.
