The Materials Scientist - Computation will be responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in computational and simulation for materials discoveries, processing and property optimization, microstructure quantification, root cause analysis for a manufacturing improvement, and material-related service & repair work. The primary responsibility in this job will be to provide technical leadership in projects focusing on material discoveries, microstructure, processing and performance relationships. Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Materials Scientist – Computations, you will: 

  • Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment involving materials discoveries, process optimization, property optimization, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvements for a variety of materials systems.

  • Develop high throughput and automated quantum chemistry approach to predict materials properties at the atomistic scale.

  • Develop and apply physics-based and data-driven models for complex materials. 

  • Share in the authorship of program proposals to external agencies and participate in the execution of government contracts.

  • Work across organizations, including interfacing with external agencies, GE Vernova businesses and Universities on technical approach and execution.

  • Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations and written reports.

  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment

  • Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, or related field or MS degree in Materials Science & Engineering or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a research environment.

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, and/or other language

  • Proficient in material informatics and/or machine learning tools and techniques such as TensorFlow, Deep Learning, PyTorch

  • Must have experience with VASP, Gaussian, Quantum Espresso, or Psi4

  • Experience with developing automate computational workflow for high throughput quantum chemistry simulation

  • Ability to work with high-performance computing clusters

  • Experience with developing active learning protocols for on-the-fly training to accelerate simulations

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.

  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required; we will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY 

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in the use of computational materials science toward industrial research and development projects, including the application of machine learning and AI-based tools to materials-focused outcomes.

  • Strong patent, presentation, and publication record

  • Experience with proposal writing

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deploy automated high-throughput quantum chemistry workflows

The base pay range for this position is $88,600-$147,600. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for a performance bonus. This position will be posted until at least 7/19/2025.
