Executive Underwriter, Casualty
Responsibilities:
- Underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet Umbrella/Excess Liability portfolio targets in accordance with underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority.
- Negotiate price, terms and conditions.
- Training and development of team and referral point for senior underwriters.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with producers, clients, and relevant stakeholders (e.g. risk managers) in partnership with Market Management, ownership of large / key accounts and clients including negotiation of participation, pricing, terms and condition.
- Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business (including client and producer negotiations where necessary)
- Proactively manage capacity
- Contribute to development and execution of regional Underwriting strategy for Umbrella/Excess Liability regionally.
- Policy Documentation and Administration Ensure accurate policy documentation issued to producers (where Arch responsibility to do so) or producers has issued documentation (where producer responsibility)
- File maintenance – ensure file is established (whether electronic or paper) and maintained for each risk and transaction handled.
- Proactively support completion of policy administration and credit control processes
- Training, developing and coaching of experienced staff (including Senior Underwriters).
- Manage complex referrals from underwriters and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate.
- Delegate work as appropriate.
- Positively represent Arch externally to the market.
- Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g. Claims, Operations.
- Deep knowledge of commercial lines products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance market.
- Participate / contribute to key projects
- Participate in cross regional activities as required / requested including and not limited to cross collaboration with Middle Market Package, Excess Construction, Excess National Accounts
Skills:
- Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to Umbrella/Excess Liability.
- Portfolio Management: Manage the underwriting books. Analyze trends and scenario plans from which portfolio strategies can be developed and implemented.
- Pricing: Analyze current performance against various benchmarks with a view to ensure adequate progress and satisfactory performance
- Market Management: Apply the knowledge of how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail; identify and resolve issues before they transpire.
- Communication & Presentation: Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally. Ability to "sell" an improvised or prepared audience winning story. Possesses strong negotiation skills.
- IT skills (Office applications): Use general office application tools e.g. Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook
- Influencing skills: Ability to persuade and motivate others to act, without executive authority
Requirements:
- In depth understanding of Umbrella/Excess Liability products and portfolio
- In depth understanding of regional / local Umbrella/Excess Liability insurance markets and competitor landscape
- Demonstrable, established relationships with brokers at peer group level and well established within local market
- Preferably degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Mgmt., or Business Administration
Locations: Preferred New York, Philadelphia or New Jersey but open to Northeast. Open to remote and or Hybrid.

For individuals assigned or hired to work in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Jersey City, NJ; New York State; and/or Washington State, the base salary range is listed below. This range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.
$107,900 - $145,700/year
Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above range may be modified in the future
