The Business Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for helping to drive Hogan Lovells’ State Attorneys General (State AG) Practice most strategic cross-functional initiatives and ensuring operational excellence across key business areas. This position requires an accomplished leader with exceptional analytical, communication, and project management skills who can translate executive vision into actionable, high-impact organizational strategies. The successful candidate will work directly with the State AG Practice’s Co-Heads and other functions throughout the law firm to solve the State AG group’s complex business challenges and drive scalable growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP & PLANNING (40%)

  • Lead the development and execution of strategic initiatives in the State AG practice through collaboration with Marketing & Business Development (M&BD), Communications, the Core State AG team, and firm leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and long-term vision. This includes proactively “managing up” to keep efforts moving forward and leadership informed.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the State AG’s Practice Co-Heads on high-priority business issues, providing data-driven recommendations for process improvement, resource allocation, and client expansion.
  • Conduct complex business analysis, including State AG trends, performance metrics, and financial modeling, to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Lead the financial operations of the State AG Practice, managing significant revenue streams with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and accountability. Oversee billing processes in close coordination with the billing and legal project management teams. Monitor budget performance, flag potential issues early, and engage with partners to resolve billing disputes, set expectations with clients, and ensure clear communications on financial goals.
  • Manage large-scale, cross-functional projects, ensuring on-time delivery, adherence to budget, and clear communication to all stakeholders.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE & PROCESS MANAGEMENT (30%)

  • Identify, design, and implement operational efficiencies and best practices within the State AG Practice to streamline workflows and improve organizational performance and productivity.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational dashboards to track project progress and measure the success of strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate internal and external communication plans related to strategic shifts and operational changes, collaborating with the firm’s Communications team.
  • Oversee staffing, resources, and preparation to ensure the State AG Practice is fully equipped to meet its obligations. This involves managing overlapping deadlines across multiple matters, enabling partners to navigate competing priorities, forecasting workload demands, and collaborating with internal teams to identify and secure additional support.

TEAM COLLABORATION & STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT (30%)

  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with all levels of business team and lawyers, from front-line partners to firm leadership.
  • Co-sponsor and drive communications timelines and collateral for the State AG Practice Co-Heads, in partnership with and/or guidance from the firm’s M&BD and Communications functions. Communications may include, but are not limited to, high-quality client-facing messages, talking points, and strategic updates.
  • Serve as a trusted communications proxy, ensuring appropriate tone, responsiveness, and professionalism across all interactions.
  • Facilitate executive-level meetings, preparing comprehensive agendas, presentations, and follow-up on critical action items.
  • Help to maintain and strengthen client relationships. On occasion, participate in client meetings to understand clients’ unique preferences and bring a personal touch to interactions, fostering trust and rapport. Develop and implement internal frameworks and regular cadences to guide consistent, high-quality client interactions across virtual and in-person settings. Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive matters.
  • Mentor and guide project teams, promoting a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Demonstrated government relations experience, including monitoring, analyzing, and advocating on legislative and regulatory issues at the state and/or Federal level. Experience managing relationships with government officials, agencies, or business organizations.
  • Direct experience with complex financial processes, including advanced billing systems, accounts receivable management, contract negotiation, or revenue cycle management.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and delivering large, complex strategic projects on time and within budget.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and align senior leaders.
  • Expert proficiency in analytical tools (e.g., advanced Excel, data visualization software) and project management methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve ambiguous problems, and act decisively in a fast-paced environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Seven (7)+ years of progressively responsible experience in a strategic, operational, or consulting role.
  • One (1)+ year in a senior or leadership capacity preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, public policy, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

HOURS

Core hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (including lunch hour) with flexibility to accommodate project deadlines and executive schedules. Ability to travel (e.g., 10 - 25%) for meetings and conferences as required.

The annualized salary range for this position is $150,000 to $178,000 depending on the candidate's overall experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Full time employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. In addition, full time employees as well as some part time employees, will be eligible for the firm’s fringe benefits as they currently exists.
