The Assistant Terminal Manager, in coordination with the Terminal Manager, is accountable for distribution management of local cryogenic liquids, vehicle maintenance and company activities to ensure efficient utilization of resources are cost effective and consistent with all regulatory agencies including, but not limited to Transport Canada, DOT, OHSA, and FDA requirements at our facility. The Assistant Terminal Manager supports a 24/7 operation with staffing working around the clock.

Job Summary: The main purpose of this position consists in supervising all activities related to the maintenance of Distribution Centre vehicles in compliance with the requirements of internal clients, operating budgets, deadlines, and requests from Management. The incumbent is responsible for managing the team, parts inventory, costs and sub-contractors, as well as promoting ALC’s safety and quality objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Terminal Operations & People Management

  • Supervises rolling stock maintenance, controlling expenses by proper scheduling of preventative maintenance. Coordinating with 3rd party vendors providing fleet maintenance services for the terminal as needed.

  • Provides supervision of terminal staff, in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Assist with completion of annual performance appraisals and development of improvement plans as required. Presents and tracks safety and quality required training. Supports the Terminal Manager to achieve sufficient driver staffing levels through recruitment and retention strategies. Coordinates with Terminal Manager to create staff schedule in collaboration with logistics center personnel to ensure sufficient manpower days to exceed targets for customer satisfaction and customer service levels.

Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality

  • Promotes and develops safe work behaviors.  Provides coaching to reduce injuries and vehicle accidents in an effort to exceed safety targets. Conducts required monthly safety meetings for all assigned locations. Develops training tools to support Airgas Merchant Gases safety initiatives.

  • Performs accident investigations, both preventable and non-preventable, recommending corrective actions to eliminate re-occurrences. Performs accident follow ups including post-accident check rides.

  • Maintains a sustainable audit process for driver files, vehicle maintenance records and shipping papers to ensure regulatory compliance. Accountable for DOT Hours of Service compliance for all drivers at assigned terminals.

Continuous Improvement 

  • Support and assist with continuous improvement throughout the business to include safety, customer service, & efficiency KPIs. Audits completion of all required paperwork accurately on a timely basis to ensure compliance with the company's various policies and procedures. Ensures maximum utilization of vehicles, equipment and other resources at minimal cost.

Are you a MATCH?

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor Degree and/or combination of education and equivalent work experience, strongly preferred. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, two to three (2-3) years equivalent experience, required. 

  • Must currently hold a valid Driver’s license 

Preferred Length & Type of Experience:

  • 2 years of Distribution/Logistics experience.

  • 1+ years of operations management experience supervising a staff preferred.

  • Previous experience in the industrial and/or specialty gas business preferred.

  • Bulk Transportation/Maintenance experience, preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Familiar with Transport Canada, DOT Hours/FDA Requirements

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  

  • Ability to write routine business reports and business correspondence in English.  

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Associates and/or customers. 

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals using the English language. 

  • Ability to learn and utilize Google applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail)

  • Able to save and maintain electronic files

  • Ability to learn and use additional 3rd party software programs to track vehicle data and maintenance.
