The Legal & Policy Team is Snap’s dedicated in-house law firm, policy consultant, lobbyist, thought partner, and all-around advisor. This team helps Snap do the right thing the right way, make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal. We’re looking for a Commercial Counsel, Content & Music to join our Legal team!

What you’ll do:

  • Provide tactical and strategic advice to Snap business and product leaders related to audiovisual content licensing and production, music licensing, creator programs, talent engagements, and marketing initiatives.

  • Support all legal aspects of:

    • Deals for Snap’s content initiatives, including structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements for Snap’s content platforms.  

    • Deals for Snap’s Sounds and other music initiatives, including structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements with music publishers, record labels, and performance rights organizations.  

    • Deals for Snap’s marketing initiatives, including structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements with studios, production companies, guilds and unions, and marketing and talent agencies.

    • Snap’s global creator initiatives, including structuring creator rewards programs, drafting user terms and policies, and drafting and negotiating talent agreements.

  • Develop and apply policies and practices for legal compliance with laws and regulations governing the use and distribution of publisher-produced and user-generated content, including those related to: privacy, copyright, trademark, defamation, right of publicity, advertising, marketing, and contest and sweepstakes, along with international regulatory requirements. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong entertainment and media background.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the digital content, music, and creator ecosystems. 

  • Experience structuring, drafting, negotiating, and advising clients on transactions with multinational media companies, studios, production companies, guilds and unions, sports leagues, news publishers, record labels, music publishers, fashion and beauty brands, marketing and talent agencies. 

  • Global practice approach with meaningful experience with First Amendment principles, intellectual property law (particularly copyright), media regulatory compliance, advertising and marketing regulatory compliance, and platform regulatory compliance (both U.S. and international).

  • Experience structuring and drafting user terms and policies.

  • Experience counseling cross-functional teams (including business, privacy, product, design, engineering, sales, marketing, finance, tax, compliance, litigation, and policy teams) and external partners with a team first attitude and insatiable appetite for learning.

  • Outstanding analytical, communication (both verbal and written), organizational, negotiation, and drafting skills.

  • Excellent legal and business judgment, strategic thinking, pragmatic and action-oriented approach to problem solving, and the ability to independently manage multiple matters simultaneously and autonomously.

  • Ability to accommodate timelines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly and communicate effectively with design, product, and engineering teams

  • Ability to use Google Workspaces and other collaborative productivity software. Hard-working and inspired about Snap’s products and culture.

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD degree from an accredited institution

  • 4+ years of relevant work experience working for a media company, entertainment studio, online platform, or transactional law firm/practice group specializing in complex media and digital commercial transactions or related experience. 

  • Active membership in at least one state bar
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of in-house experience

Compensation

In the United States, work locations are assigned a pay zone which determines the salary range for the position. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. The starting pay may be negotiable within the salary range for the position. These pay zones may be modified in the future.

Zone A (CA, WA, NYC):

The base salary range for this position is $168,000-$252,000 annually.


 

Zone B:

The base salary range for this position is $160,000-$239,000 annually.

Zone C:

The base salary range for this position is $143,000-$214,000 annually.

This position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs.
