Job Summary:

The Data Scientist II in the aftermarket analytics team of Cat Digital will collaborate with cross-functional teams to maximize the value extraction of Caterpillar’s aftermarket digital products and services. This position requires data cleaning, analysis, and modeling expertise to address complex problems. The role offers a balance of independent work and collaboration, providing the autonomy to lead specific aspects of projects while working alongside senior team members to tackle more significant challenges.

What You Will Do:

  • Utilizing various data science methods, such as machine learning, statistical modeling, and causal inference, to gain insights into customer behavior, optimize and personalize digital experiences, and generate measurable business value
  • Defining requirements and scope of data analyses; presenting and reporting possible business insights to management using data visualization technologies
  • Conducting research on data model optimization and algorithms to improve effectiveness and accuracy on data analyses
  • Coaching other Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of data science methods
  • Leveraging excellent communication skills to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods

What You Will Have:

  • Analytical Thinking: Extensive ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems; Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis.
  • Data Cleaning, Analysis, and Preparation: Working knowledge in conducting exploratory data analysis to extract meaningful patterns, trends, and insights from complex datasets, including data mining and cleaning initiatives and writing, debugging and implementing queries involving multiple tables or databases.
  • Machine Learning: Knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; ability to develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services. Experience completing specific tasks and initiatives utilizing machine learning technologies, such as classification, regression, or optimization and specific tools and techniques to process descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Programming Languages: Experience and fluency with data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), and/or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R)
  • Collaboration & Effective Communication: Experience working closely with cross-functional teams, providing data-driven insights and collaborating on projects to solve business challenges.

Considerations for Top Candidates:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree preferably in statistics, economics, mathematics, data science or a similar field with quantitative coursework
  • Typically, 3-4+ years of professional experience utilizing quantitative analysis, or a Master’s degree and 1-2+ years of experience, or a PhD in one of the associated fields
  • Experience in eCommerce and/or digital products domains
  • Experience with advanced data analysis and statistical methods such as regression and hypothesis testing
  • Practical applications of machine learning techniques, such as Collaborative Filtering and Clustering
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills and evidence of continuous learning in the analytics field
  • Experience leading analytics projects connecting data from various business domains and providing forecasts and insights to run the business profitably
  • Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Google Cloud, etc.)

Additional Information:

This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL; Peoria, IL or Champaign, IL offices with a flexible hybrid work environment.
