Acute Care Medicine Unit is an expanding Acute and Progressive Care unit specializing in providing quality care to Internal Medicine patients of a variety of medical diagnoses including renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatology, infectious disease, endocrine, gerontology, and a specialized focus on adult patients living with cystic fibrosis. Since 2015 Acute Care Medicine has been recognized by AACN as a Beacon Gold Unit for Excellence highlighting our continuous commitment to using evidence-based information to improve patient outcomes, patient and staff satisfaction, and credibility with consumers. Acute Care Medicine Unit
North Hospital, 1st and 2nd Floors

• 31 private bed unit caring for general and progressive levels of care
• Subspecialty of caring for adults with cystic fibrosis

Our Medicine Units:
• Practice evidence-based care for patients with complex medical and surgical diagnoses
• Serve patients through the continuum of care
• Provide 24-hour accessibility to hospitalists and teaching physician services
• Offer access to multiple Watson rooms, a unique space for team members to practice mindfulness
• Create a supportive and nurturing environment for experienced and new graduate nurses with an emphasis on work-life balance

The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.

Experience REQUIRED: N/A

Experience PREFERRED:
Previous experience setting up and maintaining office system (organizational skills)
Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology
Previous experience in a health care setting
Previous experience with Microsoft Office software
Previous experience with use of EMR

Education/training REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or GED

Education/training PREFERRED:
Completion of a Medical Terminology course

Independent action(s) required:
Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision.
Self directed in the accomplishment of routine activities.
Issues that involve violation of VCUHS policy or procedure that involve conflicts of a sensitive nature, or that would be considered unusual in nature are to be brought to the attention of the Nurse Manager (or designee) promptly as would be warranted by the immediacy of the issue.
Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:
Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with specific Nurse Manager.
Schedules including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit.
