A Day in the Life

In this exciting role as a Tool Design Engineer II, you will have the responsibility of developing new tooling for a variety of processes for Medtronic's portfolio of cardiovascular and neurological products. You may also contribute to new component designs with internal partners. This is an in-person role at Brooklyn Center, MN on a high performing team that works cross-functionally with many internal partners in a fast paced work environment. Candidates must be willing to relocate if they do not currently reside within a reasonable commuting distance.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Design, develop, and implement industrial tools, fixtures, gauges, jigs, and machinery to support production and process development for matured manufacturing lines.
  • Utilize PTC Creo (primary) and SolidWorks (secondary) to design, draft, and update tooling and components, ensuring manufacturability and efficiency.
  • Operate within a PTC Windchill environment to maintain accurate documentation and revision control.
  • Partner cross-functionally with internal teams (including process development, operations, and NPD) to consult on component design, modify components for fixture compatibility, and support tooling needs across the site.
  • Assemble and fabricate tooling and fixturing, collaborating with vendors and the tooling liaison.
  • Manage and execute daily work assignments through intake tickets, balancing multiple projects and adapting to varied design tasks, from simple updates to complex new designs.
  • Support both new product development and advanced manufacturing engineering initiatives, including high-visibility projects.
  • Troubleshoot legacy tooling, address gaps in historical data, and identify creative solutions to evolving manufacturing challenges.
  • Maintain a continuous improvement mindset, seeking opportunities to optimize tooling designs and processes.
  • Document all work thoroughly and communicate status and progress to stakeholders and project managers.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience,
  • or Master’s degree with 0 years of experience.

Nice to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with strong tooling/fixturing experience preferred
  • Proficiency with PTC Creo (preferred) and SolidWorks for 3D design and drafting.
  • Experience with documentation control systems, especially PTC Windchill.
  • Demonstrated experience designing tooling or fixtures for manufacturing, ideally in a tool room, industrial manufacturing, or medical device environment.
  • Working knowledge of drafting standards and GD&T; ability to design for manufacturability.
  • Hands-on experience assembling or fabricating tooling, and/or acting as a tooling liaison with vendors.
  • Previous experience in process development or advanced manufacturing engineering is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate legacy data and adapt to changing project scopes.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of cross-functional teamwork.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$80,800.00 - $121,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
