About the Role:

To coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests used to obtain data for use by the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process and accession patient samples.

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests that may include chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic and other examinations, from waived to high complexity.

  • Operate and maintain manual and automated laboratory equipment.

  • Prepare reagents, chemicals, and other solutions.

  • Evaluate and release patient test and quality control results.

  • Participate in the evaluation and installation of new instruments and/or test procedures.

  • Participate in quality processes.

  • Train new staff members and respond to questions from clinic staff.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Medical Technologist: Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related field and certification as Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency. 

Medical Laboratory Technician:

  • Associate of Science Degree in Medical Technology or relate field and certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized board/agency.

  • High School Diploma/or equivalent and meet the qualifications  for high complexity personnel outlined by CLIA:

    • Education - 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology; and 12 hours in chemistry, biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination; and

    • Training - Either completion of an approved/accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory training program, which may be included in the 60 semester hours specified or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing

  • Prior to 4/24/95 and Have graduated from an HHS approved lab training program or completed Military Medical Lab Specialist 50 – week training course.

  • Experience:   2 years’ experience in a medical laboratory

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before individuals or groups of people.

Mathematical Skills  

Ability to calculate basic figures and amounts.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic computer software.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional lab environment.  This role routinely uses standard lab equipment.
