Ghost is a private, b2b marketplace that helps scale distribution for the best brands in the world. Ghost works with leading brands in streetwear, apparel, footwear, beauty, and home to find alternative distribution channels for surplus inventory. By providing transparency, data, and a network of vetted buyers, the Ghost platform serves as the backbone for sellers to diversify and optimize their inventory lifecycle. Backed by top VC funds (Cathay, USV, Equal, Eniac), Ghost is one of the fastest growing startups in LA.

About the Role:

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager who loves solving complex processes and technical problems. You will help us build our platform from the ground up to serve our growing customer ecosystem. You’ll be tasked to be a leader who will help ship systems, drive, and design to power our next generation B2B inventory marketplace. We are an early-stage startup with amazing traction, and we’re moving with velocity! Our team has abundant growth potential as well as a direct impact on shaping the future of Ghost.

This role is remote. Our headquarters is in Los Angeles, California, and we have an office in New York City.

  • Team Building and Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-caliber engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Ensure an environment where engineers feel supported, challenged, and motivated to excel.
  • Leading Delivery: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of engineering projects, ensuring timely releases, high quality, and efficient use of resources. Maintain a balance between building sustainable, maintainable systems and shipping things quickly.
  • Technical Excellence: Maintain a strong understanding of the technology stack and architecture, ensuring engineering decisions are well-informed and contribute to a robust and scalable engineering ecosystem. You’re not the go-to technical expert, but you understand our technology choices and look for opportunities to keep your fingernails dirty in the codebase.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and deliver products that meet business and user needs. Facilitate effective communication between engineering and other teams within the organization.
  • Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges, learn from failures, and continually seek to improve oneself and the team. Encourage a culture of experimentation, learning, and feedback.
  • Problem-Solving: Identify, analyze, and solve complex problems that arise with a systematic and logical approach. Encourage innovative solutions to technical and organizational challenges. Be deliberate about which tradeoffs we’re making and if they’re right ones for each unique situation.
  • Effective Communication: Convey complex technical and project information clearly and concisely, adjusting the message to suit the audience. Foster open communication and provide constructive feedback to promote growth. Show genuine interest in understanding customers' needs, ask questions, and think answers through.
  • Technical Proficiency: Stay updated on industry best practices, technologies, and frameworks. Encourage the team to stay innovative and competitive in the evolving tech landscape.
  • Decision-Making: Make informed, data-driven decisions quickly and effectively, even under pressure. Encourage a culture of shared decision-making and empower the team to contribute ideas and solutions.
  • Scrappiness. Enjoys taking initiative; doesn’t need to gather a team around them to get things done. Embrace a “done is better than perfect” mindset, knowing things can improve over multiple iterations. Optimize for actual user outcomes over project doneness.

About You:

  • Proven track record of leading engineering teams to deliver scalable, high-quality software on time at a startup
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, focusing on promoting a positive, inclusive, and motivated team environment
  • Strong technical background and a belief that it’s important to be able to do the work you’re asking others to do; you seek opportunities to help directly in the codebase when they arise
  • You believe that our work should shape our processes and not the other way around
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, CI/CD, testing automation, and modern development tools and practices
  • Data-driven outcomes validate your work
  • You have a genuine passion and interest in the problems we are solving and how we are solving them
  • Ability to make decisions and find alignment with the team

What you will love:

  • We believe if we aren’t first, we’re last! We need to be the best at what we do. We must set the highest standards in our winner-take-all market. We fight for every dollar and never settle. We are all owners, hustlers, and streetfighters - working together to achieve a unified goal.
  • Anything we can do tomorrow, we can do today. We drive a culture of high velocity, leaving no room for analysis paralysis. We promote efficiency and progress in every step we take. If it will help the business, just do it. It’s better to get a speeding ticket than a parking ticket.
  • We are a customer-obsessed company and believe in making it magical: Our members are at the center of our universe. We continuously strive to create experiences that are 10x better at every touchpoint. We anticipate their needs and go above and beyond, delivering experiences that surpass expectations.
  • We believe that problems are opportunities and we work together as a team to solve them. Every roadblock is an opportunity for innovation. We tackle problems as a team, welcoming open discourse to deeply understand operational and customer problems to create solutions. No task is too big or too small, and we take on challenges beyond our core responsibilities, spreading optimism and confidence.
  • We embrace radical candor. We embrace difficult questions and uncomfortable answers. Our decisions are grounded in data and facts, leading to meaningful and sustainable outcomes. We value giving and receiving open, honest feedback. We critique ideas, not individuals. We embrace radical transparency and rigorous thinking, avoiding decisions driven by ego or self-interest.

Our total compensation for this position can range from $180,000 - $220,000. The actual amounts may vary based on factors such as experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the position.
