Responsible for marine assurance and operational oversight across coastal and non-operated coastal terminals in SA, including providing support to the
Refinery, EVCO, and Glencore Trading. Ensures compliance, risk mitigation, and alignment with global marine standards.

The Marine Advisor is accountable for all marine operations across Astron
Energy’s coastal footprint in South Africa, including the Refinery,
Lubricants Plant, coastal terminals, and non-operated marine facilities
where Astron has commercial or operational interests (including AE EVCO
trading and supply).

The primary objective is to ensure incident-free,
reliable, and efficient marine operations that comply with international
marine standards, local port authority (TNPA) regulations, Glencore Marine
Assurance (including Glencore trading), and Astron’s Operational
Management System (OMS).
• Assist in development of new process – vetting process of vessels
• Verifying of new process implemented – Ship to Ship (STS) operations

Key Accountabilities:
Operational Excellence: Drive incident-free marine operations through strong governance, compliance with OMS, and risk-based decision-making.
Marine Assurance & Risk Management: Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments across all marine assets (operated and non-operated), to reduce
liability and ensure regulatory alignment. This includes C&I sites for bunkering and Ship to Ship operations.
Stakeholder Leadership: Manage key marine relationships with TNPA, Glencore, and third-party terminal operators to safeguard Astron’s interests and operational continuity.
Technical Advisory: Provide strategic marine input into site operations, berth scheduling, and vessel handling to support business continuity and safe trading.
Asset Integrity & Reliability: Support maintenance and reliability programs for marine infrastructure, integrating best practices to elevate facility standards and ensure long-term sustainability.

Professional Qualification and Certifications:

  • Snr Certificate and an Engineering Degree.

Work Experience:

  • 5 years minimum of marine experience (Shipping, barge or port operations)
  • Management of Safety systems and processes
  • 5 years of Terminal Operations

Knowledge and skills:

  • This position requires a Senior level specialist with knowledge and multi-disciplinary experience involving ship, barge and particularly terminal operations. Some of the key process and knowledge requirements must focus on:
    • OE/HES experience, Process Safety Management, Reliability and maintenance and local legislative knowledge with regards marine operations.
    • Communicate effectively through a wide range of staff , ranging from jetty operator to senior managers .
    • External communication and interaction - with external partners e.g. JV partners, contractors, government employees, harbour authorities etc.
    • Change Management experience
    • Risk Assessment knowledge
