Caterpillar Career Pathways Program – Facilities Engineering (Machine Processing)

Program Overview

The 12‑month Caterpillar Career Pathways Program provides high school seniors with an opportunity to build foundational technical and professional skills in preparation for a long‑term career in Facilities Engineering and Machine Processing at Caterpillar.

Selected students participate in a structured, multi‑phase program designed to develop skills in engineering support, digital tools, and facilities operations, preparing them for full‑time employment upon high school graduation.

Participants earn high school credit while gaining hands‑on experience and receiving a paid hourly wage from Caterpillar.

Program Structure

The Career Pathways Program consists of three phases:

Phase I: Summer Internship
Introduction to Caterpillar facilities, engineering processes, machine processing environments, and digital design tools.

Phase II: Fall Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)
On‑the‑job learning focused on facilities engineering support, documentation, and data tracking using engineering and office software.

Phase III: Spring Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)
Advanced exposure to machine processing operations, layout support, and preparation for full‑time roles in facilities or engineering support functions.

Position Summary: Facilities Engineering – Machine Processing

The Facilities Engineering – Machine Processing role supports Caterpillar’s manufacturing and facilities infrastructure by assisting with engineering documentation, machine layouts, data tracking, and operational support. Participants develop skills in AutoCAD, Excel, and Microsoft Office 365 while learning how facilities engineering enables safe, efficient production.

Primary Responsibilities

Engineering & Digital Tools

  • Use AutoCAD to assist with basic facility layouts, machine placement drawings, and updates to existing engineering documents.
  • Maintain and update engineering files, drawings, and documentation following standard procedures.
  • Support facilities engineering projects by organizing drawings, specifications, and related materials.

Data & Office Applications

  • Use Excel to track machine data, maintenance records, space utilization, or project status.
  • Create and update reports, spreadsheets, and presentations using Microsoft Office 365 tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Accurately enter, review, and maintain engineering or facilities‑related data.

Machine Processing & Facilities Support

  • Gain exposure to machine processing operations and understand how equipment, utilities, and facility layouts support production.
  • Assist with basic inspections, documentation, and coordination activities related to machines and facilities systems.
  • Observe and support troubleshooting efforts by gathering data and communicating findings to engineering or facilities teams.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Communicate effectively with engineers, maintenance teams, operations personnel, and supervisors.
  • Participate in meetings, project updates, and safety discussions.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and a willingness to learn in a technical work environment.

Safety & Quality

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE.
  • Support Caterpillar’s quality and documentation standards.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area.
