Job Description:

The Senior Accountant, Construction and Development (“C&D”), a new position on the C&D team, will play a critical role in providing accounting support for the company’s robust capital expenditure (“capex”) programs, which resulted in $600M+ spend in 2023.      

Reporting directly to the Director, Corporate Accounting, this position executes on the day-to-day responsibilities of the team, which includes job cost subledger administration, journal entry recognition, capex policy adherence, reconciliation of operator reporting, balance sheet reconciliation / rollforward and internal control execution.  

This position also offers numerous opportunities to work in a cross-functional environment including significant interaction with all other accounting teams, treasury, asset management, planning and operations teams, along with several external partners. Finally, the opportunity to play a key role in scaling the team’s processes and technological resources, particularly in our growing Senior Housing Operating Portfolio (“SHOP”), will be a key day one initiative for this position.    

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in advancing process and technology improvements, has a high level of energy, positive attitude, a keen attention to detail and the ability to deftly handle multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines with minimum supervision.  C&D accounting experience is strongly preferred, but experienced accountants with an enthusiasm for learning new skillsets and demonstrated history of a continuous improvement mindset will also be considered.  

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day administration and data governance of the job cost sub-ledger to ensure C&D spend is well controlled and properly reported. Advance job cost capabilities across all segments
  • Ensure capex policy is consistently adhered to across all segments via on-going review of actual spend as well as working with segment teams to ensure policy is properly considered in the planning and budgeting phases. 
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for our field operations, our third-party managers and operators as it relates to C&D related topics.
  • Reconcile SHOP operator uploads in coordination with internal segment teams
  • Collaborate with business partners to ensure placed in service actions are done timely and in coordination with other relevant processes such as revenue recognition and interest capitalization.
  • Administer interest and internal payroll capitalization processes when applicable.  
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and ad hoc C&D reports, reconciliations and roll forwards as required by various internal and external partners.
  • Support implementation of future accounting guidance as it relates to the C&D area, including future ESG requirements
  • Assist with asset acquisition, disposition and integration activities as applicable to the C&D area
  • Identify points of inefficiency and areas of improvement; be a driving force for future state organizational goals as it relates to the C&D function.
  • Ensure controls over assigned areas properly designed, implemented and operating effectively
  • Serve as a backup to other members of the C&D team
  • Limited travel to other corporate offices, company properties and operator locations is possible  


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA designation is strongly preferred
  • Five plus years of GAAP accounting experience in a corporate and/or public accounting environment
  • Significant C&D and job cost accounting experience is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success evaluating and implementing forward thinking process improvements
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, ever evolving work environment that requires an embrace of change and the capability to adapt.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an enthusiasm for working closely with a multitude of internal and external partners.
  • Analytical capacity to evaluate problems, often with conflicting or uncertain fact patterns, and provide concise, well-conceived solutions. 
  • Ability to comprehend complex legal documents (i.e. construction contracts, development agreements) and implement proper accounting in accordance with GAAP and Company policy as applicable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel experience required, Microsoft Powerpoint and Yardi Voyager experience is a plus
