Job Description:

The ASU Safety Technician applies general safety and environmental knowledge to monitor the workplace environment and investigates safety concerns and/or accidents. Provides assistance in monitoring activities to ensure the health and safety of the university community.

Position Salary Range: $26.44 to $27.40 per hour

Essential Duties:

  • Performs routine and frequent heavy labor tasks related to on and off-site handling storage, packaging, transport and/or disposal of hazardous materials.

  • Processes routine incoming hazardous material shipments.

  • Arranges for the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.

  • May assist in maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials (e.g., biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances).

  • Participates in processing hazardous materials which includes receiving, logging, labeling, segregating, classifying, and packaging.

  • Participates in site visits to audit, provide consultation and/or conduct inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials and processes including: biological, chemical, lasers, and radiological materials, to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.

  • Consults with faculty, staff, students and others to provide technical and problem-solving assistance and answer questions related to safety.

  • Performs pollution prevention and sustainability field activities.

  • Develops checklists and identifies and informs the team of problems with the safe, legal and environmentally responsible handling of hazardous materials.

  • In collaboration with the Safety Partners, takes measurements or ensures measurements have been taken to satisfy regulatory requirements, standard best practices and in accordance with department training.

  • Prepares data and drafts reports required for tracking, decision-making and/or to satisfy compliance requirements.

  • May communicate with customers on safety-related matters.

  • Assists with reviewing, interpreting and evaluating compliance activities and policies supporting safety and environmental compliance programs and assists with implementing changes as required to address deficiencies or carry out improvements.

  • Investigates and alerts management of any regulatory changes to ensure facility and personnel safety.

  • May assist with incoming and outgoing hazardous materials shipments to ensure proper processing.

  • Assists with the development and guidance for safe and effective management of hazardous processes and the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.

  • Operates specialized equipment such as devices used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, laser measurements and radiation detection.

  • Maintains inventory and storage management systems for hazardous materials including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances. Participates in project teams conducting special studies and recommends solutions or alternatives.

  • Coordinates, participates in and facilitates safety education, outreach, and workshops for faculty, staff and students in the use of department data management and processing tools.

  • Trains staff to calibrate and maintain monitoring equipment and serves as a back-up to ensure calibration and/or maintenance occurs as scheduled.

  • May assist with creating and maintaining safety databases using various information systems or user-specific software.

  • Assists in conducting accident and incident investigations and recommends corrective action or preventative measures.

  • Works on a project team(s) to assist with the development or facilitation of high impact training materials and participates in logistics planning, communication and marketing. Assists with environmental programs to ensure federal, state and local regulatory requirements are met.

  • May serve as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.

  • Supports pollution prevention program and sustainability education programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of chemistry, hazardous materials inventory management, monitoring equipment, and response procedures to investigate incidents, monitor a variety of situations, maintain records and generate reports.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.

  • Ability to lead by example in facilitating, participating in and supporting outreach and safety education programs.

  • Ability to understand and use enterprise systems.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to effectively discuss and resolve technical issues with less-technical people.

  • Ability to perform evaluation and analysis in the identification of environmental hazards, solving environmental problems and assessing health risks.

  • Ability to lead by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institutions sustainability programs.

  • Ability to stimulate changes in individual, institutional and corporate behaviors to create a more sustainable environment.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.

  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

  • Working in laboratories, shops, waste facilities and other hazardous locations.

  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.

  • Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.

  • Participates in ASU medical surveillance programs, which may include vaccinations. Equipment used: Regular use of standard office equipment including but not limited to computer workstation or laptop.

  • Use of a keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated technology peripherals.
