Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer – HVAC is responsible for the design, analysis, and development of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and mechanical building systems throughout all phases of project delivery. Working with increasing independence, this role prepares HVAC drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment selections, and analytical models while applying engineering principles, applicable codes, energy standards, and industry best practices.

The Mechanical Engineer collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop coordinated, energy-efficient, and constructible HVAC solutions for commercial and institutional facilities. This position supports construction administration, contributes to technical coordination, and actively develops engineering expertise through continuous learning and professional growth.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

  • Provides technical support and guidance to designers and less experienced engineering staff as assigned.

  • Participates in mentoring and knowledge sharing to support team development and technical consistency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop HVAC engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment selections, and analytical models throughout all phases of project delivery.

  • Design heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hydronic, refrigeration, exhaust, and mechanical equipment systems in accordance with applicable codes, energy standards, and engineering best practices.

  • Perform engineering calculations including heating and cooling load analyses, ventilation calculations, duct and pipe sizing, pressure loss analyses, equipment selection, and system performance evaluations under the guidance of senior engineers when appropriate.

  • Prepare coordinated construction documents, equipment schedules, ductwork and piping layouts, control narratives, system diagrams, and supporting design documentation.

  • Utilize CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to develop and coordinate accurate 2D drawings and 3D HVAC models.

  • Collaborate with architects, structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and controls teams to deliver coordinated and constructible HVAC system designs.

  • Support construction administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), participating in site visits, assisting with commissioning activities, and supporting field coordination.

  • Participate in project coordination meetings to communicate design progress, resolve technical issues, and support successful project execution.

  • Maintain organized engineering documentation and contribute to quality reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to expand technical expertise in HVAC system design, energy efficiency, decarbonization, and building performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience) required.

  • 4+ years of experience designing HVAC systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, or mission-critical facilities required.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

  • Active NCEES Record for licensure maintenance preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience designing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hydronic, refrigeration, and mechanical equipment systems.

  • Strong understanding of the International Mechanical Code (IMC), ASHRAE standards, International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and other applicable building and energy codes.

  • Proficiency with HVAC load calculation software, CAD and BIM platforms, and industry-standard engineering design tools.

  • Strong knowledge of construction documentation, multidisciplinary coordination, and construction administration practices.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while working effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
