Restock supply carts as needed. Put away supplies as directed. Move dialysis equipment (when not in active patient use) within the hospital and dialysis unit as instructed by the RN. Keep unit clean and tidy as needed.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Responsible for the safe transportation of patients to and from areas in the clinic or hospital via a wheelchair or stretcher. Helps patients by transporting them into, around, and out of the facility.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures appropriate identification of patients prior to shifting or transporting them.
  • Learns patient name and determines destination, mode of travel, time, and other data, following written or verbal instructions.
  • Ensures that transport equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers are in proper working condition prior to patient pick up.
  • Lifts patients on and off beds, moving them to and from treatment areas using wheelchairs or moveable stretchers.
  • Guides or escorts incoming patients from admitting area to designated location.
  • Carries patient’s luggage or personal belongings.
  • Assists patient in walking to prevent accidents by falling.
  • Delivers messages, mail, medical records, and other items to patient.
  • Assists in maintaining order and cleanliness in entrance point.
  • May collect laboratory specimens, drops them off to laboratories, and picks up test results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The work environment is characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels.  May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
  • This position regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients, and assisting with ambulation. The work also requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and the employee must be able to bend over.
  • This job could include exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work as defined by the US Department of Labor.
     

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma required or GED equivalent

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • 0 – 1 year’s related experience.
  • CPR Certification
