The Senior Manager, Broadcast Architecture at Disney will lead the innovation and advancement of the production technology stack, encompassing both hardware and software solutions. Senior Manager, Broadcast Architecture will focus on specializing in integrating software and hardware frameworks and systems in Broadcast. This role requires a deep theoretical and practical understanding of the technologies that drive the creation, monetization, and distribution of all forms of consumer-facing linear and digital video/audio content.

Responsibility includes numerous systems such as Playout Technology, Studios, Production Control Rooms, Remote Production, Post-Production, Contribution/Distribution Systems, Networking, Cloud Compute, Production Software and Virtual Environment and more.

The Senior Manager, Broadcast Architecture will develop complex migration plans accounting for operational and system limitations ensuring the migration to SMPTE 2110 and Cloud Production is executed without any disruption to our consumers. The Senior Manager, Broadcast Architecture will design underlying architecture for use in various production systems.

The Senior Manager, Broadcast Architecture position will work independently to develop, establish and approve technology that efficiently and effectively delivers the requirements set forth by technical, business or operations leaders.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Automation of System Testing: Define process for technical platforms. Implement and manage automated testing protocols to streamline system validation processes and enhance efficiency.

  • SMPTE 2110 Readiness Testing: Conduct comprehensive testing to ensure system readiness for SMPTE 2110 standards, verifying compatibility and performance.

  • Migration Planning: Develop and execute migration plans for transitioning from J2K to SMPTE 2110, encompassing both software and hardware aspects.

  • Architecture Design: Conceive system interfaces and business application prototypes. Design architectures to support the integration of streaming and broadcast signal acquisitions, ensuring robust and scalable solutions.

  • Team Engagement: Collaborate with architects, system engineers, and maintenance engineers to deploy and launch new systems effectively. Provide multi-layered technical expertise for the new platforms and systems.

  • SMPTE 2110 Transition Leadership: Lead the transition to SMPTE 2110, including vendor readiness assessments, cutover planning, and execution in coordination with operations.

  • Technical Expertise: Apply multi-layered technical expertise to current systems to drive innovation and enhance the technology stack.

  • Redundancy Design: Develop redundancy designs to address and mitigate system weaknesses, ensuring reliability and continuity. Influence the shaping of future products by contributing to the architecture.

  • System Test Plans: Create and oversee detailed test plans to validate system performance and functionality.

  • Migration and Integration Oversight: Manage and oversee the migration and integration of systems, ensuring smooth transitions and operational alignment.

  • Cloud Integration Support: Facilitate and support the integration of cloud technologies into production environments, optimizing scalability and efficiency.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in Broadcast Engineering and / or System Architecture

  • Identifies and resolves complex technical, operational and organizational problems

  • Deep understanding of architectural principles and emerging technologies

  • Experience designing Broadcast Systems and defining frameworks and architecture

  • Experience leading large-scale projects and driving technical innovation

  • Impacts the business results by supporting and funding of projects, services, and/or technologies and developing policies and plans

Required Skills:

  • Experience architecting Broadcast Systems

  • Focus on integrating hardware and software frameworks in Broadcast

  • Design underlying architecture for use in one or more Broadcast systems

  • Proficient in SMPTE standards for broadcast television and video production/streaming environments with a current certification such as not limited to ST 292M, ST 424M, ST 2110, ST 2059, IEE1588, ST 2022-7, SCTE-104, etc.

  • Knowledge and experience with on-prem and cloud-based storage and compute infrastructure platforms and current technological offerings

  • Experience working at Broadcaster and Streaming Service – knowledge about traditional production and streaming

  • Experience managing 24/7 operational environments and engineering teams, managing live-broadcasts

  • Provides leadership to others who lead and to Engineers

  • Develops departmental plans, including business, production and / or organizational priorities

  • Strong communication Skills and able to deliver projects on-time and on-budget

Required Education:  

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Broadcast Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field and / or equivalent work experience

The hiring range for this position in California is $164,500 to $220,600 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
